Udupi, Jun 28: A symposium on the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam laws was conducted at the Udupi Bar Association auditorium on Friday, June 28.

Dr Nirmala Kumari, director of Vaikunta Baliga College of Law, Udupi, inaugurated the event by lighting the lamp. In her opening remarks, she emphasised the crucial role of law in delivering justice, likening it to the pillars of peace (temples), knowledge (educational institutions), health (hospitals), and justice (courts).

M Shantharam Shetty, a senior advocate and the main speaker, offered insights into the new laws. He advised lawyers to file cases before the new laws take effect, noting that they mandate hearing the accused before initiating legal proceedings.

Shetty criticised certain aspects of the legislation, such as the provision allowing police 14 days to register cases, which he argued might lead to lawlessness and compromise public safety. He also expressed concerns over potential violations of fundamental rights and perceived protections for police officers over justice for victims.

Shetty also discussed specific amendments, including the legalisation of handcuffs and the introduction of community service as punishment for theft. He mentioned that certain amendments, like those concerning hit-and-run cases, were scheduled for future implementation beyond July 1.

The event began with a prayer led by Roopashri, an advocate from Udupi, and saw participation from legal professionals and students. Renold Praveen Kumar, president of the Udupi Bar Association, welcomed the attendees, while Sahana Kundar, advocate, presided over the proceedings. Rajesh A R, chief secretary of the Udupi Bar Association, concluded with a vote of thanks.

The symposium provided a platform for dialogue and critique among legal experts and students regarding the implications of the new criminal laws.
