Puttur, Jun 29: In a dramatic turn of events, a 36-year-old woman from Piligoodu, who attempted to end her life by jumping into the Netravati River, was saved by her pet dog. The woman, distressed by a recent argument with her husband, walked four kilometres to the river with the intention of committing suicide.

On Thursday night, after a heated quarrel with her husband, the woman left their home and headed toward the Netravati River. Unbeknownst to her, the family dog followed her. As she climbed the retainer wall and prepared to jump, the dog bit onto her chudidhar and began barking loudly, attracting the attention of nearby passers-by.

Two individuals on a bike, alerted by the dog’s persistent barking, rushed to the scene. They managed to pull the woman back from the edge of the river, preventing a tragic outcome.

The woman, originally from Bengaluru, had moved to Piligoodu after marrying a local youth. The couple had been living on her husband’s ancestral property. However, the husband, a mechanic by profession, had been frequently quarrelling with his wife, leading her to contemplate suicide.

Despite the police’s efforts to convince her to return to her husband's home throughout Friday, the woman refused. She is currently staying at a friend’s house, and according to sources, her mother will soon take her back to Bengaluru. The couple's children remain with the husband.

The courageous act of the pet dog in saving its owner has been widely praised by the public. The dog's quick thinking and loyalty not only averted a tragedy but also highlighted the profound bond between humans and their pets.
