Udupi: Movement of heavy vehicles restricted on Agumbe Ghat due to landslide threat

Media Release

Udupi, Jun 30: In response to the threat of landslides exacerbated by heavy rains, Dr K Vidyakumari, DC has issued an order of restricting heavy vehicles at Agumbe Ghat.

The order is issued under Section 115 of the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 and section 221(A)(2) of the Karnataka Motor Vehicles Act 1989. This is effective till September 15. Only light vehicles will be permitted to use the Thirthahalli-Malpe Road of National Highway 169A at Agumbe ghat.

The directive prohibits heavy vehicles from accessing the route, citing safety concerns posed by inclement weather conditions and heavy vehicle traffic.

The heavy vehicles travelling from Thirthahalli to Udupi are instructed to detour via the Thirthahalli-Mastikatte-Siddapura-Kundapura road. Conversely, heavy vehicles moving from Udupi to Thirthahalli should take the Udupi-Kundapura-Siddapura-Mastikatte route.

To mitigate the risks associated with potential landslides, ensuring the safety of commuters and minimising damage, authorities urge all motorists to comply with the restriction and use alternative routes as specified until the stipulated date.

Tunnels offer a solution by providing efficient and traffic congestion-free transportation options. Tunnels reduce travel times, cost of ever increasing fuel, decrease pollution levels, and stimulate economic growth by connecting distant regions to urban centers. Ever-growing infrastructure needs, benefit significantly from tunneling projects. As we have made so many tunnels in hilly areas, for Road and Rail network, options must be explored to carve tunnels in Agumbe ghat to connect Udupi and Thirthalli and make the highway suitable for all seasons.
