Doha, Oct 29: Champions are the ones who hold on to their nerves even when they are in hot waters and come out with flying colours despite having their backs against the walls most of the times. The ladies throwball team of Tulu Koota Qatar proved that they are the real champions as they defended their title and reigned supreme at the 10th Ladies Throwball Tournament organized by Mangalore Cricket Club at the Ideal Indian School here on Friday October 28 evening.

The finals between bitter rivals MCC and Tulu Koota Qatar went down to the wire as expected and the latter overcame a spirited challenge from the former before being crowned champions for the 5th time. The nail-biting finals would go down in the 10-year history of the tournament as one of the best and keenly-fought matches ever. The very fact that the finals that began around 9 pm local time went down up to 11.30 pm proves that it was by far the toughest match between two equally good teams that matched each other in every department.

But Tulu Koota led impressively by Shobha Shetty played great on big points and defended their title. Despite being defeated by MCC in the league stage and trailing by a set and playing against the host team that had immense fan following in the final, Tulu Koota played a champion’s game with the support of boisterous crowd that cheered, danced and rejoiced at each point. The final score 25-27, 27-25, 25-21 was the ample proof for the tough contest that decided the winner.

The annual tourney, one of the most popular events among the Mangalorean community in Qatar was inaugurated on Thursday October 27, 2011 evening after MCC  energic president Richard D’Souza had welcomed the gathering. The prize distribution ceremony was presided over by Alfred and Rita Sequeira. Richard D’Souza honoured Tulu Koota, the only team that has participated continuously for 10 years in the annual event. Five Tulu Koota players, Jyothi Ravi Shetty, Vani Prakash Rao, Milan Arun, Veena Vishwanath Rao and Vijaya Shetty who have taken part in the tournament for 10 years too were felicitated on the occasion.

Ivy Rosario, captain of the Karavali team is the most senior member who has been participating in the annual event for many years. Every year she looks young and energetic and her throws and smashes have challenged the new players of the tournament. She too as felicitated on the occasion for her great sporting spirit by the MCC. Jerry D’Mello then felicitated the each participating team and presented them with a memento. Samuel Raj, who was the referee for the match too was honoured by MCC.

CONGRATULATIONS for the wonderful teamwork from my team. It was a commited MENTAL game and to the point. We proved that we were always THE best irrespective of the change in rules and the hot sun. Like Alex mentioned, this was one of the toughest match ever played...and i know how difficult it has been in the last few weeks, to all of us to come and practise, thanks to for the successful strategy we had on the spot! Shobhakka, Akshata, Vijaya, Bharathi, Vani, Akhila the smasher, Milan, reshma, Jyotiakka, chandra and Veena ..HIP HIP HURRAY!!!
Would appreciate if MCC, next time extend these game scheduleS for 2 weeks like before, because making ladies to play in hot sun during morning is not at all practical especially at this part of the world, or keep it later in winter.

Thanks Alex for the wonderful write up and pictures. As always well committed personnel of Daijiworld.

Arun, fully agree with you, hats off to our dynamic ladies to their teamwork & commitment. having played for 10 continous year, it was the toughest play off schedule offered to them. The only way was to have have a thumping & as they say actions speaks louder then words & the damage so deep & hurting i saw some people disaapearing from ground & the out towards gate...but we should also thank the MCC ladies team for putting up a great fight. making the finals to nail finger bitting & hair pulling finish......3 cheeers to TQ-Team..Dinga Chikka, Dinga Chikka, Dinga Chikka..Ay Ay Ay Ay...
