Mangaluru: National Conference on ‘Addiction Forensics - The Drug Investigation' held on July 1

Mangaluru, Jul 3: The department of Forensic Science, Institute of Allied Health Sciences, Srinivas University and department of Forensic Medicine, Srinivas Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Mukka, in collaboration with PG department of Criminology and Forensic Science, School of Social Work, Mangaluru had organized a one-day national conference on the theme ‘Addiction Forensics - The Drug Investigation' in Hall 1, Mukka Campus on July 1.

More than 220 delegates from various colleges from all over India participated in the conference.

The programme was inaugurated by lighting the lamp by dignitaries on the dais, which included the chief guest Manoj Kumar Naik, assistant commissioner of Police, Mangaluru North sub-division, Dr CA. A Raghavendra Rao, The Chancellor, Srinivas University, Prof K Satyanarayan Reddy, vice-chancellor, Srinivas University, Dr Udaya Kumar Rao, dean, Srinivas Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Prof Pavana Krishnamoorthy, dean, Institute of Allied Health Sciences, Dr Vrinda J Bhat and Dr Swathi D, organising chairpersons and Dr Saritha D’Souza, organising co-chairperson.

The chief guest Manoj Kumar Naik, assistant commissioner of police, Mangaluru North sub-division addressed the gathering by emphasising on the stages of drug addiction. He stated that youths are the most vulnerable for substance abuse and hence, he advised the delegates not to fall into the trap of drug addiction. He also encouraged the students to support the law enforcement agencies to control the cases of drug abuse.

Vice-Chancellor, Srinivas University, Prof K Satyanarayan Reddy provided more insight to the theme of the conference and briefed on the 4 ‘Cs’ of drug abuse and adverse effects of certain types of drugs.

The chancellor, Srinivas University, Dr CA. A Raghavendra Rao in his presidential address expressed the evil of drug abuse. "It also effects on not just the person but also the family as well," he said. He appreciated the organising team for choosing the theme of the conference which is need of the hour.

The E-Souvenir was released by the dignitaries and a MoU was exchanged between Srinivas University and Code F Solutions Pvt. Ltd., Nagpur which is a leading private investigation agency.

The deliberations of the national conference was done by eminent speakers:

Dr V Premanand, associate professor, department of Psychology, St Agnes Centre for PG Studies, and Research spoke on the psychological aspects of drug abuse including symptoms and behavioral aspects of addicts.

Dr Parinita Sanjeev Nayaka, assistant professor, Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, AJ Institute of Medical Sciences briefed on the process of investigating an addict by observing various modes like wounds in prominent areas of the body, tattoos etc.

Veena P, senior ccientific officer, Toxicology Division, Regional Forensic Science Laboratory, Mangaluru gave an insight on investigating scene of crime related to drug abuse, drug dynamics and detailed descriptions about different types of drugs.

Maheshchandra Nayak, associate professor, SDM Law College, Mangaluru spoke on NDPS Act and its legal framework. He also focused on the implementation, challenges preventive measures and rehabilitation of addicts.

Chirag C Suvarna, cyber security analyst, CyberSapiens, Mangaluru spoke about the dark web and how it’s used to supply illegal substances, the various means through which people can be easily trapped and finally about the tor browser usage to access dark web and the safety measures.

Poster and paper presentation was organized on various areas of addiction forensics.

The programme ended with a valedictory where the chief guest was Prof Pavana Krishnamoorthy, dean, IAHS, Srinivas University alongside prize distribution for various competitions and the winners are:

• Scramblers- First prize- Ruchitha A and Deeksha
