Muscat: Fun Rules the Day at MCCP Mixed Throwball, Children's Cricket Tourney

Muscat, Oct 29: With a record number of members’ participation and careful preparation under the able leadership of the veteran Mangalorean leader and the present president of MCCP, Stanley T H Fernandes, it was a fantastic sports event of mixed throwball tournament for adults and cricket tournament for children. The Mangalorean Catholic Centre of the Parish (MCCP, Sts Peter and Paul Church, Ruwi) presented an enthralling sports event titled, “Mixed Throwball for adults and Cricket Tournament for Children” on Friday, 28th October 2011 at Oman Sports Club Grounds, Al Wadi Al Kabir.

As usual the venue was beautifully decorated by the members of the Executive Team highlighting the 20th year’s theme and logo. The registration counters were meticulously managed by Sharmila D'Silva, Shanti D'Souza, Flavia Menezes and Shaila D'Souza. After the traditional breakfast of Sajjige Bajil prepared and sponsored by Alex Aranha, registration for the both events was carried out.

The inaugural ceremony commenced with an opening prayer by Mariete Fernandes, Spiritual Secretary of MCCP. Young and ebullient public speaker of the community Darryl Saldhana was the anchor of the inaugural ceremony and he conducted the proceedings professionally in both Konkani and English. It was a really praiseworthy effort by the current Executive Committee members who are giving a high priority to the new and young talents of the community to inculcate the Konkani Culture and Language in them. Darryl Saldhana was extremely good in his presentation of the program and received a huge round of applause from the audience.

Denis Alva, a well known community activist, supporter of MCCP events for many years and a member of the Executive Committee in the past years was the Guest of Honor. He was escorted to the center stage by Eulalia Pinto, Vice President : Sports and Finance Committees and Lawrence Alva, Vice President ; Cultural, Spiritual and Community Services Committee. After the welcome speech by Stanley Fernandes, Denis Alva was honored with a floral bouquet. The inauguration of the event was held in a traditional manner by breaking a pot (Mosaru Kudike). The announcement of the inaugural event was done by Lawrence Alva. The core team members of MCCP, Henry Martis, Donald Pinto, Suraj Rebello and Clarence Pinto were on the dais.
 
There were 12 teams in the Mixed Throwball Tournament and with a show of fine throwball tactics Mariete Fernandes’ team won the champion’s trophy by beating Lawrence Alva’s team. In the children’s cricket tournament the team of Alister Martis and Aldin D'Souza won the winners’ trophy and runners up was the team lead by Sherwin D'Silva and Anshul Pinto

The Mangalorean community’s sports arena’s super king Suraj Rebello was the complete in-charge of the tournaments with an apt support from ever green Dolly Gomes. Sudhir and Ronnie D'Souza were the umpires for the tournaments.

After the tournament the prize distribution ceremony was conducted by Suraj Rebello. The chief guest of the prize distribution ceremony was Sam Varghese, a high profile, energetic and Self motivated Managing Director of the prestigious Al Hajiry Group of Industries. Sam Varghese who hails from Punallur, Kollam, heads one of the fastest growing business houses in Oman with 16 divisions and over 1,800 employees. Sam Varghese was presented with a floral bouquet by Eulalia Pinto. The members of the winning teams, first and Second places, were honored with beautifully designed medals and teams were presented with trophies. Prem Colaco, sports secretary of MCCP, proposed the vote of thanks.

The Executive Committee team comprising of Vice President Sports and Finance : Eulalia Pinto, Vice President, Cultural, Spiritual and Community Services - Lawrence Alva, General Secretary - Prescilla Menezes, Honorary Treasurer - Benedict Pereira, Internal Auditor - Wilson Mark D'Souza, Cultural Secretary - Ambrose Ivan Moras, Sports Secretary - Prem Colaco, Spiritual Secretary- Mariete P. N. Fernandes and Community Services Secretary - Ophilia Lazarus had done a great job under the able leadership Stanley Fernandes. Their selfless service during the 20th year’s celebrations has to be appreciated and applauded.

    An enjoyable Friday to spend on the ground. Well organized event with a lot of energy and stamina exerted by the existing EC members behind the scenes and displayed on the ground as well!!
