Bengaluru, Jul 9: In light of the heavy rainfall, the district administration in Udupi has implemented precautionary measures to prevent any mishaps, said Lakshmi Hebbalkar, minister for women and child development and the in-charge minister for Udupi district.

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Hebbalkar mentioned that a progress review meeting had already been conducted in Udupi to prepare for the rainy season. Instructions were given to cut down trees at risk of falling. Approximately 400 such trees have been removed, and 80 electric poles have been relocated.

In some low-lying areas, water has entered homes, and residents have been moved to care centers. Learning from last year's issues caused by rainfall, special precautions have been taken this year. Some houses have been damaged due to landslides, and one person has died. Immediate relief measures have already been instructed to the district administration, Hebbalkar said.

She also pointed out that Udupi city lacks an underground drainage system, causing water to accumulate on the roads during rains. Plans have been made to construct an underground drainage system, and the tender process will commence within a couple of weeks. Due to heavy rainfall yesterday, schools and colleges have been declared closed today, she added.
