Mangaluru, Jul 9: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), in collaboration with the health department, convened at Mangala Auditorium, MCC office, Mangaluru, on Tuesday, July 9, to discuss dengue prevention and awareness measures.

Addressing the gathering, mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur said, "Dengue cases are on the rise in areas like Bunder and Bejai, with 118 reported cases in the city. MCC is actively implementing preventive measures, including regular waste water removal and immediate fogging in affected areas during the unpredictable rainy season, which is conducive for mosquito breeding."

Naveen Kulal said, "Dengue fever peaks during the monsoon, with a 50% increase in cases in Mangaluru City this season. Prevention involves maintaining cleanliness, especially in areas like flower pots and half-built buildings, which contribute to mosquito breeding. Weekly drying and using specific chemicals in gardens are crucial."

A C Vinayaraj, corporator, mentioned, "We are launching a dedicated malaria and dengue app, allowing residents to report cases and seek assistance. Awareness campaigns are essential at places like KSRTC Bus Stops and Bunder. Immediate actions are needed to address unsanitized pools, which can harbour harmful amoebae."

Health officials assured, "We are actively monitoring dengue cases since January, conducting regular fogging and spraying in schools and public spaces. A proactive app for reporting will be implemented soon."

Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur added, "We need dedicated personnel to manage these issues post-COVID, including redevelopment of the Malaria app for updated case information and facilitating medical interventions."

Capt Brijesh Chowta stressed, "We must act collectively to combat dengue, building on our experiences with previous health crises. The Health Department needs a cohesive strategy and swift actions."

Dr Naveen Kulal explained, "Differentiating malaria and dengue, we are focusing on preventing mosquito breeding with regular spraying and introducing Guppy fishes to control larvae. Proper construction guidelines and app features for waterlogging are essential."

MCC commissioner Anand noted, "Currently, 10 wards are vulnerable, and we are coordinating through dedicated platforms like WhatsApp to address issues promptly."
