Mangalore: No Compromise on Issue of Corruption, says Advani

Update: 2.35 pm

Mangalore, Oct 31: "There can be no compromise on the issue of corruption. The extent of corruption is less in the nine BJP-led states, and hence there is no question of the Jan Chetna Yatra being an embarassment to the BJP," said senior BJP leader and former deputy Prime Minister L K Advani who landed at Mangalore airport on Monday October 31 morning by a special flight.

He was addressing a public gathering at Nehru Maidan in the city, as part of his nationwide Jan Chetna Rath Yatra against corruption. He arrived from Bangalore after addressing a public gathering there on Sunday October 30.

In his 45-minute speech, he said that he had better response from Karnataka to his Yatra than from any other state. He said he was advised not to enter Karnataka, but he was adamant and addressed the public in the state.

"Credibility is the biggest virtue in public life," he said, adding that he did not want to omit Karnataka despite the corruption scandals.

He also said that it was a cherishable moment when in 1968 Udupi became the first Jan Sangh city corporation in the then undivided Dakshina Kannada district. "I have seen the country's first general elections, seen many governments, and travelled through almost all districts, but never seen a government as corrupt as the present one led by Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh," he added.

He also hailed the contributions of Sardar Vallabhai Patel, and lamented that the Congress had forgotten its great leader.

Taking potshots at the Congress, he said as many as 400 institutions in the country have been named after the Gandhi family, which goes against democratic principles and does no good to the nation.

On cash-for-votes scam, he said it had brought shame to the country. There were 19 MPs who were lured with bundles of currency notes, out of which three were from BJP. These three belonged to SC and ST communities, and they shared the issue with their partymen. They were advised to inform a TV channel, which carried out the sting operation, wherein the three ministers are shown accepting the money only as part of the sting. The three MPs were 'whistleblowers' who exposed the bribe money in the parliament, in front of the whole world, he said.

"India was known for its vibrant democracy, but then came a government (UPA) which had lost majority and was asked to prove itself in the parliament. It did so, by buying MPs who were sold for crores," he said.

If the Rs 25 lac crore of black money is brought back to the country, every village would have good roads, school, electricity and other basic amenities, he said.

A whistleblower protection act will come up soon which will give more powers to the citizens to fight against corruption, he said, adding that only acts will not work unless the youth take the initiative to fight against the menace. The UPA government arrested whistleblowers of the cash-for-votes scam, he said, adding that he had dared the ruling government in the parliament to arrest him in their place as he was the leader of the party that blew the whistle.

On the issue of Kashmir he said it was the British policy to divide and rule, but few people know that there were 550 princely states too which had the power to join either India, Pakistan or remain independent as per their wish. This was a British strategy to divide India not only into two countries, but ensure that it is splintered. He spoke at length about Jan Sangh founder Dr Shyam Prasad Mukherjee's sacrifices in making Kashmir a proper part of India, and added that if a solution had to be sought, one needs to go back to Dr Prasad's era.

Proactive Steps to Tackle Corruption: CM

Chief minister Sadananda Gowda, who recieved a huge round of applause from the gathering, echoed Advani on the issue of corruption. He said that Advani asked him what steps he had taken to tackle corruption, for which he answered that he would do so through transperancy. He said he will soon install cameras in govenment offices and the Vidhana Soudha, so that the public can directly keep a watch on the government's activities. Soon, steps will also be taken to ensure that people can directly place complaints at the CM's office on phone, he added. These and other such proactive measures will be taken through citizen's charter to ensure transperancy in the government, he said.

On the issue of denotification of land and illegal mining, he said the additional chief sercrary committee will be directed to take apppropriate action on those proven guilty.

On red tapism, he said it was another face of corruption, and ever since he took over, as many as 4000 files had been cleared off, and the pending ones are taking longer time due to legal procedures involved in clearing them.

Curiously, state energy minister Shobha Karandlaje and higher education minister V S Acharya, both from coastal region, were absent.

BJP spokesperson Ravishankar Prasad, state BJP chief secretary C T Ravi, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, district incharge minister Krishna J Palemar, state BJP president Eshwarappa and other BJP leaders like Ananth Kumar and Nagaraj Shetty.

Sadananda Gowda, state BJP president Eshwarappa, MP Ananth Kumar, BJP national leaders Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Dharmendra Pradhan and others were present to welcome him at the airport.

From the airport he headed straight to Nehru Maidan on a road show. In the afternoon he will travel in the ‘ratha’ from Mangalore via national highway towards Mulky. From there he will proceed to Hejamadi, Udupi and participate in several programmes.

Dear Ramesh, Crowd was double than this for Janardhana Poojary's loan mela during 80's. Population was quite less during those years but still crowd is double than this yatra. BJP leaders using their corrupt money for transport arrangements and for the people in village's all over DK and Udupi district it's a free picnic. Arrangements are being made to carry people from their doors to venue of the speech to and fro. My dear friend people should attend these functions voluntarily not by force. No one get scared to see the crowd, People are concerned about making money how and when.

When people become old, they turn blind, deaf and mentally also they deteriorate. That's the reason Govt and other public and private sector decides retirement at the age of 58 or 60 years, the age they consider the person is unproductive to the organisation. This oldman, started Rathayathra some 11 years ago in the name of "Ram Mandir" and infused hatred in the soceity and finally was the reason of demolishing national monument "Babri Masjid". How this man was left scot free when law is equally applicable to VIP or common man.

After that BJP was in power and where this Advani build "Ram Mandir". Crores of rupees mobilised in the name of Ram Mandir and where this money was gone? Now it is another drama when his partymen are in jail in the charge of corruption. This man knows that he has last chance to become PM in this way and finally this greed result in "utopian dream"

Is this Jan Chetna Rath Yatra or JAN CHEATING YATRA? This kind of ‘yatras’ are for collection of unaccounted black money and donations from public who are easily fooled by politicians harping on religious and useless political issues. What Advani can preach about corruption in Karnataka- the most corrupt state of India- where half a dozen former and present ministers of his party are in jail on account of corruption

MR. Harsha Malhotra- Very good(witty) comment.
I hope Mr. Advani understands the meaning of what he said "NO COMPROMISE". Did he give speech in english or hindi while using these two words along with CORRUPTION.
Please Mr. Advani - PRACTISE WHAT YOU PREACH and be OBJECTIVE ANALYSER/SPEAKER - NOT A SUBJECTIVE ONE.

Of course, India was behind 8 to 10 years in technology upto last decade than some of the developed countries, but now India is promising and equally competeing with them.
Corruption is at its best with ( SOME or MOST - NOT ALL) politicians and government personnel. I donot think it is right to say " I AM RIGHT - YOU ARE CORRUPT". This shows the egoistic nature of the person.

If we ask a person who was born 18 years before independence, still living now - he/she will tell us- whether our INDIA is DEVELOPED OR NOT during these tenure of 50 to 60 years , irrespective of any party ruled, amidst any difficulties and calamites incurred/happened.

We should be thankful, because we are living in INDIA & WE ARE INDIANS- because of THE UNITY IN DIVERSITY, FLORA & FONA OF THE WORLD and BEST DEMOCRACY(which most of us misusing)

We need to rectify ourselves & BE SINCERE IN WHAT WE SAY AND DO.

This is surely your election campaign yatra. By this yatra you wasted huge public money.

The way Anna Hazare did without wasting public money is the real campaign against corruption. And we all supported Anna Hazare for his fight against corruption.

At first instant I thought Advanji is so frank to tell the public that Karnataka Government (1st BJP ruled state in South India)is the most corrupt one....May be in the world itself. If survey is done Karnataka might get 1st place in corruption list. Even their 1st CM is in jail and many ministers as well. They can now start "Prison Assembly" parllel inline with the one in Vidhana Soudha. BJP then can boldly say "Bharathiya Jail Party". We had enough and more Natakas in our state, now Advaniji has come down to make a film out of it -"MAHA-KAR-NATAKA".'JAGO SONEWALE JAGO'. William Rodrigues,Mangalore.

He has forgotten that Karnataka is the most corrupt state in India and the scams here in just 3 years dwarf the so called national scams completely. The stage managed votes for money scam was the brain child of Advani. Unfortunately he is walking scot free while his chelas who enacted the show are in jail, and he is today shedding crocodile tears for them for his own mis adventure. He has conveniently forgotten operation kamala where his party shamelessly bought opposition MLA's with illgotten mining money. Welcome Mr.Advani.
In the name of Rath Yathra you are roaming in luxury cars and flights. Instead of calling it as rath yathra you could have simply named it as First class ALL INDIA TOUR...

A 'Rath Yatra'should be 'Arth Purna' Sadly this is not! Close
to being an 'Anarth Yatra'with the mess inside the party and the leadership trying hard to convey another message!

I dont understand for what this Yatra is all about. If it is for Corruption then instead of doing this yatra they should have thrown yedurappa long back and should have shown how to deal with the corrupt ministers. Now this is hipocracy and Waste of Money. How he can face the people while talking about corruption when his own people are so corrupted??? BJP or Congress all are same....We need a change brothers.

His Karnataka Team is corrupt to the core looting state money and land. This fellows mind is totally corrupt. Incapable to understand the our contstitution which mentions India as secular democratic republic, erecting religous sentiments, he has shred the country forever. Mangalore being notorious to religious hatred may be good ground for twisted minded like this fellow and his assoicates like RumSene.

Rath Yatra! Where is Rath? Basically it is a 'COLLECTION YATRA' He does it every year or once in two years to collect funds accumulated through corruption. Unfortunately this year his collection would be less as many of his chelas are in the jail.

It hurts greatly to see the way govt., public and private funds are getting wasted for a totally unwanted and unproductive activity. Just imagine the cost of special flights, the chariot itself, the cost of security, movement of VIP's and ministers, the list goes on. The same money could have been spent on something very productive for the benefit of the society. This shows how primitive and uncivilized Indians we are!!!
