Hyderabad: Reddys Seek Special Class Status in Prison

Hyderabad, Nov 1 (PTI):
Mining baron and former Karnataka minister Gali Janardhan Reddy and Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) Managing Director B V Srinivas Reddy arrested in connection with the alleged illegal mining case on October 31 moved the special court seeking 'special class prisoner status'.

The duo arrested from Bellary in Karnataka by the CBI, which is probing alleged illegal mining and irregularities in allotment of mining leases to OMC, have been remanded in judicial custody and lodged as ordinary inmates at the Chanchalguda central prison here.

The petition filed before the special court for CBI cases has sought direction to the jail authorities to provide them special class facilities.

"An application seeking special class prisoner status has been filed in the court today as our clients being an MLC and former minister are tax payers," a senior counsel of the Reddys said.

The court has posted the matter to November 2.

Meanwhile, jail sources said if the court grants permission, the Reddys can be accorded separate accommodation, food and toilet among other facilities.

He is innocent until proven guilty. So, special accommodation with his own cost should be provided to him. Once convicted, then he will be ordinary inmate.

    Dear Daiji:

Indian inmates are inmates. There is no first class inmate and 2nd or 3rd class. Every citizen has only one vote to cast there is nothing special. The best way to treat Reddy, Yeddy and all their host should life time prison in Andaman Island with out any facitlites, no phone or visitors. Give them only rise conjy and pickles. A culprit is a culprit. Only then corruption will come to an end. Anna Harare will never be able to stop corruption but this kind of rigid rules can stop corruption in India. Can the State and central government come forward and do it? Then no hunger strike needed in India.

Ok, let the govt. keep him under house arrest either in Taj or Oberoi or Sheraton or JW Marriott. He will pay all the bills in cash that too in US dollars. He can be transferred from his present jail by Bell Helicopter.

Comparing Kasab with Indian undertrials or convicts is a foolishness. Kasab is a product of religious fundamentalism but being a prisoner in India becomes the universal duty of a country (India) to treat prisoners in a specific manner. If we forgo this over emotional enmity, we will be offenders at international level. I quite agree that Kasab is an enemy of every Indian but the Reddys are the one who robbed our own mother - Kannada Maata. You and I would have benefited if the ore sold as National Asset' than as personal belonging of this particular family.

At the same time, do remember that Kasab is in detention not exchanged as Jaswant Singh did with Masood Azhar.

There should be no sympathy for these corrupts. Let them repent for their wrong doing in jail. What are they expecting in jail royal facilities and 5 star food.
Haan mil sakta hai royal facility jaise ki Kasab ko miltha hai jail mein Mutton Biriyani!

When a convict is given a verdict, the time he spent in detention is deducted from the punishment.
As regards the Reddys, if the authorities budge and alter the accommodation status, the period they so spent must not be subjected for deduction from the sentence period. May be that the Reddys are certain that they will not be punished hence they demanded for this upgradation ?
