Udupi: Man Buys Ornaments at Half Price, Ends up with Spurious Gold!

Udupi: Man Buys Ornaments at Half Price, Ends up with Spurious Gold!

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Nov 2: They say all that glitters is not gold. Here is a case, where this saying turned true, literally!

In a gist, a man from Udupi bought gold at half the price - quite an achievement in this age when gold rates have hit the sky - only to realise later that nothing comes cheap, especially not gold. In the end all he was left with was spurious gold, and a bank balance lighter by several lacs.

Here's what happened.

Raghavendra Achar from Kedoor village in the district lodged a complaint with the court, claiming that a person from Rajasthan had cheated him by selling him ornaments made of spurious gold instead of genuine ones. The complaint has been since referred to Kota police station for investigation.

Achar says that he was waiting for a bus at Tekkate bus stand of Kundapur taluk on July 20 this year, when a person introduced himself as Pappu from Rajasthan. Pappu told Achar that he used to work as truck driver, and sought Achar’s help in securing some job. After several days, he called up Achar to confess that he was facing financial crunch on account of his sister’s marriage, and that he was therefore prepared to sell off the gold ornaments he had with him at half rate. Pappu offered gold ornaments worth Rs 16 lac for eight lac rupees, but after negotiation, brought the price further down to Rs 6.5 lac.

On Pappu’s invitation, Achar, accompanied by his friends, Ravish and Raghavendra, visited Alwar in Rajasthan on September 2, brought back the ornaments provided by Pappu as samples, and got them checked through qualified jewellers for their genuineness here. Having been satisfied about the quality of ornaments, Achar went back to Rajasthan on October 4, and accepted 900 grams of jewellery items in exchange for Rs 6.5 lac. On reaching his hometown on October 7, he got the fresh set of ornaments verified, and found that he had been cheated by Pappu.

As per a complaint filed by Achar through the court, which was re-routed to Kota police station, a case has been registered.

This seems to be a known practice with some modification. Few years back, there was a similar story involving a group of north indians trying to sell fake gold by first showing them the a piece of real gold and then give away fake stuff. First, never buy gold from third party. All trades should be legally bound. Even reputed jewellers cheat people. People who cheat can easily play with emotions of people to get carried away in such dealings.

Seems like the man managed to gain the sympathy of the person by seeking for a job and giving a cock and bull story about his difficulties.

If anyone who wants to sell their gold for cash there are 100s of Gold Shops who are willing to buy at the nearly market price. Why should some one sell their gold for less than half the price????? Only for purpose of cheating. If you want to be fooled, there are 1000s who can fool you. Pappu dance kara diya sala!

Mr. Acharya should have applied simple logic as to why would somebody sell gold worth 16.5lac for 6.5lac to him? Greed and the hurry to become rich quickly are the root causes for this folly. I am reminded of another similar modus operandi used by these gangs. They approach people in the city saying they are poor farmers from some remote village and came across a pot of gold while digging the land. Now since that is antique gold, they say they cannot dispose of to a jeweler as the police will come in the scene, hence the deep discount and hurry. Many have got cheated this way in the lure of earning a fast buck!!

    Prevention is better than cure.

Cheap things are rarely good and good things are rarely cheap.

6.50 lacs, is it hard earned money. If it is Yes, Mr. Achar would have consulted a goldsmith. Would not have bought 900 gms gold as one stretch.

P.S. : sorry to state above comment of harold and wrongly posted in chetan's murder case!!

This person called me many times even though i did not know from where he got my mobile number ( suspects ... Stock brokers , Free sms senders, Telecoms operators. email id providers and any provider who asks u for Ur email id or mobile/land-line number for registration .....this info flows to unscrupulous people in society )and the end result is the same -DUPED
