Congress, Not BJP, Running Parallel 2G Trial: Joshi

New Delhi, Nov 3 (IANS): Bharatiya Janata Party leader Murli Manohar Joshi, who heads parliament's Public Accounts Committee, Thursday hit out at the Congress, accusing it of running a parallel trial in the 2G spectrum case as it was scared of making contradictory stands on the controversial issue.

Joshi's comment came a day after Law Minister Salman Khurshid alleged the BJP was running a parallel trial of the 2G case.

"Mr. Khurshid is saying that there should not be a parallel trial to a sub judice matter... We did not make the note, the notes were made by your government. You are running a parallel trial. You are worried that if you say something in court and something else in the PAC how will you reconcile," Joshi said, referring to the controversial 2G note sent by the finance ministry in March which suggested that then finance minister P. Chidambaram should have insisted on auction of the spectrum.

Joshi alleged that the note circulated on the 2G scam was aimed to ensure that one stand is maintained on the 2G scam -- in front of court and the PAC, which is looking into the case.

"Why was it (circulation of note) done... so that when they give a statement in front of the PAC, it is the same and there is no controversy. This is happening only because PAC got to the crux of the matter, that then finance minister P. Chidambaram did not object (to 2G spectrum allocation) and allowed this to happen," Joshi said.

The BJP has been asking for a probe into Chidambaram's role in the 2G spectrum scam as the then finance minister. Party leader L.K. Advani has also asked for a probe in the role of the PMO in the spectrum allocations.

Has Mr. Joshi forgotten the letter written by him to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on December 12, 2007, opposing auctioning of 2G spectrum saying it would lead to cartelisation and adversely affect PSUs BSNL and MTNL? Now, same Mr. Joshi is accusing home minister P Chidambaram, who was then finance minister, for having caused immense loss to the exchequer by failing to push for auction of 2G spectrum. Is it not double standard of BJP?
