Mangaluru: Mayor announces restart of 'Operation Tiger' against street hawkers

Mangaluru, Jul 24: Mangaluru city mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur announced that due to increasing complaints about street hawkers and street food in areas such as Kankanady, KSRTC, Attavar, and Mannagudda—causing difficulties for pedestrians and raising health concerns—the "Operation Tiger" will resume on July 29.

During a phone-in programme on Wednesday, July 24, at the Mangaluru City Corporation, mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur addressed media queries.

He stated, “Street vendors operating with tents and permanent setups will be evicted. We have designated five vending zones in State Bank, Kavoor, Mannagudda, and Surathkal. We will ensure that street vendors relocate to these areas. However, there has been local opposition to the Mannagudda vending zone.”

The phone-in programme also received numerous complaints regarding road conditions, drainage issues, and other matters.

    The roadside street vendors selling their eatery from lady hill towards manna Gudda have occupied lot of spaces. They have their cart along with the tent and chairs plus the cool boxes are spread on the footpath. It is very difficult to walk on both the footpath and on the road due to the vehicle blocking. There should be some control. Let them sell but not occupying the space illegally.

    In the mayor phone in programme I had asked him about the implementation of Bye Laws of Ward Commitee which has been submitted to him and waiting approval from the council. I had also requested him to get it approved it in his tenure which he had agreed. This will be first of its kind in whole of the country and will be a credit to Mangalore. Such a important news should have been mentioned in your publication

    What are you doing for the frequent movements of these Auto-Rickshaws which are plying unnecessarily helter-skelter, stopping as they wish and hindering other commuters who are wanting to move urgently.

    Most shops on Car Street occupy the footpath to display their goods making it i.possible to walk on the footpath. The Corporators of MCC are silent about this because the 'maamus' who own the shops are their supporters, cousins or partners. First clear the footpaths and then take care of the poor hawkers on the steet.

    I urge the Mayor to take 'Operation Tiger' mission on the Ladyhill bustop to Chilimbi till Pai Sales showroom area. Pedestrians are unable to walk on this road due to inadequate space for walking as there are fast food vendors, tender coconut vendors, vegetable vendors , jackfruit vendors, fruit stalls etc etc on this road. The footpath is so dirty there are human shit everywhere and filty urine smell. No one can walk on the footpath. No proper light as the tree covers the brightness of the light.

    Roads were widened and the work accomplished were very very poor quality. All the petty pretty vendors have occupied the widened roads.

    Our mayor first of all start to vacate unauthorized shops opened in parking place in commercial buildings. Instead of that they are diverting public mind by vacate footpath vendors, They don't have guts to take action against those buildings. This Tigger operation starts only Festival seasons.

    100% right. All the basements parking places were commercialized. The mayor, D.C. Corporation Commissioner and the Police Commissioners are powerless in this case???!!! This is the reason, the rightful commuters are paying penalty for parking elsewhere.

    What about the Basement parking Sold/Converted as Shops/Hotels and Offices in Buildings .... Every time an Announcement is made to that effect....No Action taken as yet....

    Operation Tiger for street vendors is a good move, they pay haftas not taxes ,are a strain on the infrastructure, dirty the surroundings breed antisocial elements and compete with legal shopkeepers. Operation Tiger should also be carried out against cars and vehicles parked on footpaths (paved or not paved) and by the roadside impeding smooth flow of traffic and forcing pedestrians to walk on the road risking thier lives. Alternative sites have been provided to hawkers but they do not want to move.

    Street vednors is part of our indian culture as long as they stick to timings . strictly follow hygeiene many poor people also want to eat fried rice and gobi etc but cant afford ...so low costs

    "Street vendors set up tents on the footpath and conduct their business, making it impossible for anyone to walk on the footpath. The car parking is haphazard and chaotic. Why doesn’t the Mangalore City Corporation find a solution for this? Operation 🐅 or operation Gheedhad bakki..
