Bangalore: Karnataka Yatra Exposes Advani's Waning Influence

Bangalore: Karnataka Yatra Exposes Advani's Waning Influence

By V S Karnic

Bangalore, Nov 6 (IANS): L.K. Advani, once hailed by his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as 'Loh Purush' or iron man, second only to India's formidable first home minister Sardar Patel, is no longer so - at least for his party's Karnataka unit.

That is the message the Karnataka BJP, which is ruling the state for the first time, sent out to the party veteran when he came here Oct 30 to address a public meeting as part of his Jan Chetna Yatra, a nationwide roadshow against corruption.

Matching Advani's waning influence over the party is the Karnataka unit, reducing the state - once seen as the BJP's gateway to ruling southern India - into a minefield of scandals and den of dissidence.

Around a dozen ministers, that is, nearly one third of the cabinet, did not attend Advani's public meeting. All of them are known loyalists of arrested former chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa.

They were against Advani touring the state to talk against corruption when their local chieftain was behind bars in not one, but two corruption and illegal land deal cases, and facing possible arrest again in three more similar cases.

They tried using the media to loudly convey to their once undisputed leader that he is not welcome in the state at this point of time.

They told reporters here, of course on condition of anonymity, that Advani had cancelled the Bangalore public meeting and will confine his yatra to party strongholds in the coastal districts, over 350 km away from the state capital.

But Advani did not take the hint.

He is now said to be seeking from the harried state leadership reasons for such a large number of ministers staying away from his yatra, not only in Bangalore but also in the coastal districts.

He will have to be satisfied with whatever explanations or excuses are offered to him, for 'disciplinary action' against absentee ministers could split the party and bring down the BJP government which still has about 18 months to rule.

With various explanations failing to provide convincing answers for their absence, an exasperated Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda let the truth out, indirectly though, saying it is an internal affair and will be settled within the party.

Advani's road show against corruption and black money might have been overdue. However, his eagerness not to allow his party's scandals in Karnataka derail the yatra was not only misplaced but untimely, both for his party in the state and more so for Karnataka.

The state, including capital Bangalore, the nation's tech hub, has paid a heavy price for political instability that has dogged it since 2004.

The BJP rode to power in May 2008 with the plea to voters - 'one vote and one chance' to provide 'su-raj' (good governance).

Let alone good governance, it could not provide even a clean government as dissidence against Yeddyurappa and scandals surrounding him and several ministers have engulfed the state since then.

Even as Advani was saying in Panaji, the capital of neighbouring Goa, that he had no regrets about showing the door to Yeddyurappa, the arrested leader's loyalists were proclaiming in Karnataka that he will lead the next elections, due in April-May 2013.

The BJP veteran's Jan Chetna Yatra may not rouse Indians against corruption as he is hoping, but it has succeeded in further fuelling dissidence in the party's Karnataka unit.

The unintended fall-out of Advani braving the Karnataka scandals to visit Bangalore is further weakening of Chief Minister Sadananda Gowda's position. Gowda is no mass leader and was Yeddyurappa's handpicked successor.

Given the deepening fissures in the Karnataka unit of the BJP following Advani's yatra, Gowda's rule might well become a holding operation till the next assembly elections.

It's a sorry situation that Karnataka could well do without as more than half the state -- 90 taluks (revenue sub-divisions) out of 176 -- has been declared drought-hit - a ground reality that Advani's higher goal of a corrupt-free India sorely missed.

The question is, in which country on this earth minorities are safe and have equal right as they have in India? Srimaan Ramesh Poojary, Bangalore the answer is: Canada, USA, UK, most of the european countries, australia, Singapur and South Africa.

Will you all a African black boy to became our Indian president? USA did. There are many Indians in American politics. Indian alone: 2,843,391 0.9% of the U.S. population (2010). 36% of scientists at Nasa are Indians.

UK has many indians in their politics and while one estimate for 2008 suggests a total of 1.6 million British Indians. Millions of indians are citizens of those other nations. What do you think why Indian massive population Immigrated to these countries for to be percecuted or discriminated? Our Indians who live there are proud to be their citizens. Now you tell me how many forigners wants to be our citizens or live in out country as citizens?

There is a big world out side Indian border try to explore it. Minorities in India are Indian origins not aliens. Canada stands first in the world for human rights and India faaaaaaar down.

My humber request to Mr. Advani to retire from politics and start some social work. He can never become the PM of this country for another 10 years. I have heard his speeches which always contain hatred and negative issues. He is big dramatist who opening praised Mr. Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan. No patriotic Indian will support his thoughts and yet this old man has many supporters. I just cannot imagine what is wrong with some people.

Dear RAJ ULLAL, Mangalore. I completly agree with you, India is a wonderful country with the great hospitality. When ever a guest visits Hindu home woman received them with the lamp, betel nuts and leafs and water, the highest stand of honour to a guest as per Hinduism teaching.

Hindu people are so lovely, caring and accommodating anyone regardless any religion or creed. I personally carry great honour for them. If Hindus were bad, cruel or tribal who look for slimier ones to accommodate with the minorities would have vanished on the surface of Indian land.

A small group of people who do these evil acts in the motivation of political interests. It not only minorities but majority of Hindu community condemn their acts. Indeed as you said India is great and people of India are great, when we go to other countries we learn it. God bless India.

@lukas, malpe you are really lucky that you are staying in a country like india. In this country minorities are also having equal rights to live in like majority. It's not like the other countries like Pakistan, Taliban, Afganistan, Iran, Iraq etc. If you had lived any of those countries you didn't even had the freedom to pass such silly which you are commenting in Daiji.

Loh Purush's "Loh" became corrosive and lost its reliability. He himself pretending as modern day Ram and riding on rath inspired by the ancient valmiki's katha.

In contrary his vaanara sainya captain hanuman Yeddyurappa's fist got stuck while stealing the pea nuts from narrow bottle neck and monkey vendors caught him and put him inside the steel bar cage.

Therefore his rath lost its path and stuck its wheel in a muddy ditch. So he jumped out of rath, caught a bus and diverted his yaatra with a new sutra to introduce his beloved daughter to the PM seat. Advani aimed to hit two doves with a single bow but now he caught up in his party’s row.

The best answer to all such remarks is to be silent as is done by Mrs Sonia Gandhi. The truth will finally prevail.

Mr. Krishnaraj, Advani's contribution is nothing but destruction, despite being called as iron man, which is in fact an exaggeration in his case, has miserably failed to take firm decisions & also to act wisely whenever required. He appears as if the reincarnation of Hitler. He could be called as Shakuni which suits him the best.

If only RSS didn't emphasized India to be a Hindu country after independence, we wouldn't have had Pakistan at all. I suggest you to go through the history thoroughly & also just don't overlook or act blind to the misdeeds of your favourites. Thank you.

Dirty minded people like you who never want to think about the reality will think in this way.
Although I firmly feel he should not focus on PM candidate for next election, One should respect him for his contribution to the country, his dedication in the parliment. He is true BHISHMA in the parliment.
Pakistan is a gift given by Gandhi and Nehru to this country, you seems to be very RAW in history, Please go back to the history and come back before you comment again.

Many people in the BJP (and among he general populace) want the issue of corruption to remain the 'concern' of Anna Hazare and his team representing the civil society, and hence, they believe that Advani was not making a special point for the people of India by taking out a Jan Chetana rath. Moreover, neither the BJP party leaders nor the rival parties, nor, more importantly, the people of Karnataka, believe that Mr ADvani would only expose BJP to ridicule by undertaking the Yaatra, in the midst of colossal corruption by Mr Yeddyurappa and some of his cabinet colleagues, when its only government in the South could not come out unscathed in the 'India against corruption' fight. Mr Advani might have attempted his Yatra as smokescreen for its own sizable contribution to the national political corruption total, so think many vigilant and discerning political observers.

On top of it all, Mr Advani's demanding explanation of why so many BJP leaders absented from participating in his Yatra, would appear to be a futile effort to cover up his own smokescreening intention behind the Yatra. By the way, instead of Jan Chetana Yatra-s, BJP leaders should engage in a lot of house cleaning however huge it may appear to them, and only in the long term they will be a welcome rival to replace the corrupt Congress/UPA. There is, incidentally, little hope for the BJP to dream of expanding its power base in the South, and even retaining its base in Karnataka is likely going to be pretty tough.
