BBC Reporter Arrested in Iran

Tehran, Nov 14 (IANS): A man who secretly worked for the BBC Persian TV channel in Iran has been arrested on charges of spreading lies about the country and making attempts to manipulate the public opinion, Xinhua reported Sunday.

The channel, launched Jan 14, provides eight hours of service daily, seven days a week, in Farsi language in peak viewing time of Iran and Afghanistan from London.

According to the Mehr news agency, Hassan Fathi was arrested by the Iranian intelligence forces.

In September, Iran had arrested six other people, including a woman, for working for the BBC and distributing photos, videos and information to reflect a negative image of the country.

Most people in Iran have access to satellite dishes and follow global events through various domestic and foreign television channels.

Iran's intelligence ministry has warned Iranians not to work with the BBC.
