Bangalore-Karwar Train: Politicians Rush to Take Credit

Udupi, Nov 15: As confirmed by Daijiworld on Sunday November 13, the Yashwanthpur - Karwar train finally became a reality when it chugged into Udupi late in the evening on Monday November 14.

But it was amusing to see political parties, specially Congress and BJP, vying with each other to take credit, lauding their respective party leaders.

Both Congress and BJP supporters gathered in big numbers to welcome the first train extended to Karwar from Yashwanthpur, Bangalore.

When the train arrived at Udupi Raiway station, in a simple ceremony Katapady ZP president Shankar Poojary, John Rebello, S S Tonse, Ramachandra Acharya, Shekhar Kotian, S T Kundar, Madhusoodan and others were present to welcome it and express their happiness. Sweets were distributed.

But the real drama unfolded when both Congress and BJP began shouting slogans to take credit for this achievement, for which thousands of commuters were waiting for years.

For Congress, former Karnataka minister, and probable candidate for the upcoming Udupi-Chikmaglur Lok Sabha bypoll Jayaprakash Hegde took the lead. He along with  other Congress leaders Amrith Shenoy, Krishnamuthy Acharya, Keerthi Shetty, Divakar Kundar, Yatish Karkera, Umesh Naik, Birthi Rajesh Shetty, Janardhan Bhandarkar, Prakyath Shetty, Yuvaraj, Naresh Kamath, Ganesh Raj, Yajnesh Acharya, Anandi and others were present to welcome the train. But banners were seen everywhere outside the station with images of Rahul Gandhi, railway minister of state Muniappa, AICC secretary Oscar Fernandes, E Ahmed, and others.

Speaking to Daijiworld J P Hegde said that this has happened only because of the marathon efforts of Congress, especially its pressure from the region. "We have been constantly in touch with our ministers at the centre. Mamatha Bannerjee had earlier promised us, but after that the file did not appear, finally due to the efforts of minister Muniappa and our own Oscar Fernandes the dream of Bangalore - Karwar train has materialised," he said.

On the other hand, on behalf of BJP, leaders like V Hegde, Ravi Amin, Katapady Shankar Poojary, Geethanjali Shetty, Gladys Almeida and others were present to welcome the train.

"It was the efforts of our MP and state chief minister Sadananda Gowda. It was the dream of our CM to extend the train to Karwar. In the next few days, there will also be a halt at Kundapur," said Iqbal Hejamady, BJP leader speaking to Daijiworld.

Looking at the tug of war for the 'train' credit, JD(S) district president of Udupi Devi Prasad Shetty told Daijiworld that JD(S) had fought for the cause, and today it has been realised. "You can't give credit only to the state government, it is a joint effort of the state and the centre. Kumaraswamy has worked for this cause," he said.

In my opinion, the delay of extending the Train from Bangalore to Karwar is for followings reasons:-
1> Private Bus Loby. Many Buses are plying beteen Kundapur, Udupi,Mangalore
2> Even though Karnataka Government is not interested to extended the Train to Karwar because, KSRTC also running many Buses in this root.
3>Less important given by the Railways to this root.
4> Kerala MPs,MLAs,Local People are unitedly fighting for more benefits from the Central to their State.
5> We the People of Coastal Area are not come together and fight for our cause. Our Leaders are also not unite and demand for the development of Coastal Area. What to do this our fate. We are talking and Commenting more but not doing anything collectively. God only should solve our probems.

"Politicians Rush to Take Credit" – Well captioned article!! Look at the Kundapura Station!!
Our MP (Current CM) came to Kundapura Station tried to grab some attention of media & public.
Look at the earlier media coverage
    1) http://www.daijiworld.com/news/news_disp.asp?n_id=98322&n_tit=Kundapur%3A MP Demands Urgent Upgradation of Facilities at Railway Station

    2) http://www.deccanherald.com/content/150742/stop-train-kundapur-says-mp.html

    3) http://www.deccanherald.com/content/159247/kundapur-neglected-stop-railways.html

Showing displeasure in the station is foolishness, if interested he would approached to concerned authority in parliament, in case of no consideration he would have called party workers to protest same!!

Even though Kundapura is strong BJP hold area with many big names resulted nothing. Our 3 times champion MLA busy with attending engagement / marriage ceremony / funeral etc to target common man’s consideration for next election !!

Hats off to Mr. Muniyappa, he is responsible to start this service. Yeddy n DVS were not aware of this service. Definetly the credit goes to Italian led congress. Bcz indian lead BJP is busy in landscams n corruption. Konkan railway credit should go to Mr. George Fernandes of Janatha Party. When BJP came to power after the project was almost over.

I some what agree with Mr Nagesh Nayak's comments though I am not politically biased to any party.

It was due to GEORGE FERNANDIS's effort that Konkan Railway came into existence. Before that Mangalore was only connected to Kerala and TN except a narrow gauge train between Blore and Mlore(that too before 1991 if I am correct).

Mr Fernandis had a dream of connecting Coastal Karnataka with Bangalore through Konkan Railways along with connecting Mumbai-Mangalore.

Konkan Railway was opened in 1997 and unfortunately it took 14 years for us to have a train to our capital.

Mr George Fernandis is far far better than Muniyappa, Moily, Oscar, Poojary or SM Krishna. They failed to extend the night train to Karwar though the extension was planned by railway officials.

If Fernandis had become minister for one more term, by today definitely we would have had better railway connectivity between Mlore-Blore instead of 11-12 hours travel.

We hope to have a person with such a calibre and vision as our minister.

    I agree with your opinion.
This train is helpful for old people, students and people who visit Bangalore rarely. For working class people this is not at all supportive.

Since it connects Puttur, Bantwal, Subrahmanya, Hassan with Udupi, Baindur, Bhatkal, Kumta, Karwar, students studying in this region will largely benefit. They will definitely save 75% of their travel expenses.

It will boost tourism also since the coastal is connected with malenadu. Will be helpful for pilgrims visiting Udupi and Kolluru from Hassan area.

This train should run daily and should pass thru Mlore central. Last but not the least, 2 minutes stops at Kundapur and Murudeshwar is must.

Mathsagandha Express reaches mangalore from Mubai within 16hours which covers a distance of more than 1000kms...whereas this train takes more than 16 hours to reach karwar from Bangalore which is little more than 600 kms..With all probability i think this wont suit long distance travellers..Its okay for passengers travelling within uttarkannada and dakshina kannada districts. This will be much benificial if it takes tweleve hours to reach from Bangalore to Krwar. This is my personal opinion.

Of course, the special credit of realising Konkan Railway goes to Mr. George Fernandes and envisaging it to Mr. T.A. Pai & Mr. Madhu Dandavate. But today the B'lore - M'lore train touched Karwar solely as a result of the relentless efforts of the local travellers associations, and not due to any politician or his party. The ministers and politicians on contributed in extending the service to Kannur.

Whether it is beneficial to Bangaloreans or not who bothers?. Jai ho.. to all who put their efforts. Now all should unitedly fight to extended Night Train to Karwar or Goa. I hope are are co-operating this cause.

One should not bother for the political parties who are at logger heads to take credit each other. We must give credit to the (common people) "Local Association" who were in constant touch with Railway Minister to materilise their dream come true. There is no doubt that the political parties have not helped in persueing this cause for the people of this region. So What!!! . It's their fundamental duty of the elected representatives to do their duty.

INDEED IT IS A DREAM COME TRUE. Let not people compete with one another for the credit but continue to work for the progress of the country. People in the region were languishing for want of proper transport and it is good to see that the collective of all concerned have yielded the desired results. The entire project of the konkan train was a dream child of people like George Fernandes, Barrister Nath Pai and Madu Dantavate who worked relentlessly in achieving their objectives. The present service between Bangalore and Karwar has been possible only because of Konkan Rail line which was built up over twenty-two years ago. Let us say kudos to the pioneers of the venture.

Those who want to take the credit now, try for the Bangalore night train service up to Karwar instead Kannur and for extra train service between Mangalore and Bangalore via Arsikere. The effort for even day train extension was not of some political leaders but the public.
