Kaup, Aug 28: In a significant political development, Saritha Shivanand, a Kaup municipality member from the SDPI (Social Democratic Party of India), joined the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) on Wednesday morning. This move came just hours before the election for the president and vice-president positions in the municipality.
Saritha’s induction into the BJP was marked by the presence of Kaup BJP MLA Gurme Suresh Shetty.
Later in the day, she was elected as the vice-president of the municipality.
In the elections, Harinakshi was elected as president, while Saritha Shivanand assumed the role of vice-president. The vice-president position was reserved for Scheduled Castes, a category that had no representatives within the BJP’s 12-member council.
The Congress party had also sought the vice-president position.
However, in a last-minute political move, the BJP succeeded in securing the seat by inducting Saritha Shivanand from SDPI just hours before the election.
