Udupi, Aug 29: Manipal police arrested Mohammed Shuraim (22), a native of Bhatkal, on charges of sexually harassing a girl on a train within 20 hours of the crime, based on a photo provided by the victim.
According to details, the victim, a resident of Guddeangadi in Udupi, works at an IT firm in Bengaluru. On August 24, she boarded a train from Bengaluru to Murudeshwar. On August 25, as the train passed Mulky, the accused, Shuraim, allegedly harassed the victim repeatedly. After an altercation, he apologized. The victim took his photo and filed a complaint through the railway app.
Later, the victim also filed a complaint with the railway police after reaching Udupi railway station. The railway police handed over the case to Manipal police. As the complaint was registered on the railway app, higher officials brought the matter to the attention of the SP of Udupi. Manipal police quickly sprang into action.
The photo of the accused taken by the victim was the only clue the police had. Accordingly, they obtained a list of 1,200 people who travelled on the train that day. They began their investigation based on facial features and clothing. After obtaining the CNR numbers, the police accessed the mobile numbers of all passengers. During this process, the police reviewed CCTV footage and tracked the movements of the accused. They discovered that the accused was a resident of Bhatkal. The police then went to Bhatkal and took him into custody. The accused is a student in Bhatkal and was returning after completing a 10-day course in Mysuru Jamaat. He has been produced in court and sent to judicial custody.
