Omar Briefs Governor on AFSPA Meetings

Jammu, Nov 16 (IANS): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Wednesday briefed Governor N.N. Vohra about his meetings with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and others in New Delhi on withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from some parts of the state.

Abdullah called on the governor to give details on his meetings this week with the prime minister, United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Defence Minister A.K. Antony and Army Chief Gen. V.K. Singh amongst others.

The chief minister had last month said that AFSPA, which protects armed forces personnel, would be lifted from some parts of the state very soon.

The army in a recently held Unified Command meeting had said "no" as it believes that even partial revocation of AFSPA would hamper anti-terrorism operations in the state. The Unified Command, headed by the chief minister, consists of top civil, police, army, paramilitary and intelligence officials that takes decisions on matters relating to security in the state.

The meeting between the governor and chief minister lasted for more than an hour.
