Mangalore, Nov 17: A girl, allegedly a child labourer, was rescued from a house in Pandeshwar Old Kent Road here on Thursday November 17.

The girl has been identified as 12-year-old Minaz. She was allegedly employed as a labourer in the house of one Mansoor Hussain.

Based on a complaint, officials of the labour department, child development project office (CDPO) and Pandeshwar police raided the house at around 10. 30 am on Thursday.

It is said that the residents of the house did not open the door at first. But on the insistence of the officials, they finally opened it. The officials found a 12-year-old girl in the house and took her into their charge.

Speaking to reporters, Gangadhar of CDOP said that their office had received a complaint that the house in question had around five or six child labourers. The CDOP then informed the labour department and Pandeshwar police and with their help raided Hussain's house.

"We found one girl by name Minaz, aged around 12 years who was employed in the house. We will send her for medical examination and then hand her over to the child welfare committee," he said.

The raid operation lasted for around three hours from 10.30 am to 1.30 pm.

The residents of the house, however, had a different version to narrate. They said that the girl was not employed but was only staying temporarily at the house. "During Ramadan her brother from Bergur village of Tarikere in Chikmagalur had come to seek alms from them, and met with an accident. We helped him out and once he was fine he returned to his hometown. About 10 days back, he came to Mangalore again for treatment and brought his sister Minaz along with him. Since then she has been staying with us while her brother is undergoing treatment," the family members said.

The girl also corrborated the statement and said that her brother had met with an accident sometime back and that she had come with him to Mangalore.

She further said that she was a student of 6th standard in Tarikere government school.

Minaz will be handed over to the child welfare committee and further investigations will be conducted.

Many years ago I was living in a hostel in Bangalore. In front of our hostel there was a construction workers family living under a small tarpaulin tent with their only daughter aged around 10 years. One day late in the evening father of that girl came to us asking help. At the late night street boys threatening to him with the knife to give his daughter to have sex with her! He managed to safe her daughter first night. He asked for the help if they come again. At the late night he knocking the gate, we came out. We saw two young boys above 20’s standing with the sharp knife threatening harm them. We quickly opened the gate and let his wife and daughter for safety, and let them stay whole night inside the hostel compound. We warned the boys and gave better advice to get marry and have your own wives instated of committing serious crimes.

They threaded us too and went, but never returned. In the case of child labor, if parents are too poor and not capable of safe guard their daughter and if they find a better home to safe and their daughters and at least have some good food shelter I don’t think it is really called child labor. Either the poor parents cannot give them education, safety and a better future that will be absolutely fine under the humanitarian ground. If government cannot take care no matter give Christians a chance we will do it and show you, but don’t put false claims on us. India is a democratic everyone has a right to choose a religion of their choice.

It is very sad to note that even after abolishing child labor it is still existing. But it is very difficult to understand that a poor family how can it live without earning.A child of 12 yrs needs food, shelter, and clothing. If she / he doesn't have anyone to support them what they will do ? Where would they go ? But we should not take advantage of this situation. Instead through proper channel if you employ them and look after them as your own children .Give them education then I am sure you are doing good Samaritans job. I have seen in Mangalore young once made very big houses and left their old parents live in it and they have gone abroad in seeking of better future, in such cases if you employ some one with good intention I don't think so there will be anything wrong in it.In my opinion it will be a win win situation

People find it difficult to get food and shelter. Let us try to help them out by providing finance or books or dresses and try to educate those less fortunates. Let us take it with humanity. Whoever it is, my advice to the residents of the house, if you can please look after her like your child and try to give her education and culture, so that she also would lead a fine living and God would definitely help those who help the deserving.

Human cruelty is getting worse every day, and they apply this devilish nature towards the weaker
sections of the society especially at the innocent and defenseless children. If the concerned public won't look around such cruel exploitation of the children, this problem will be getting worse every day. Those people who are caught for cruelty towards the children must be punished very severely, also to
    warn such cruel human animals.

Government failed to provide the food, shelter and clothing to all its citizens, Hence these children opt to work as domestic aid to support their family.I believe working as domestic aid is better than begging in streets. Government need to find the root cause for child labor and eradicate this. but the Government is busy in filling their own pockets.

Its too early to decide wheather it was child labour case or humanity case as how the owner of the house claiming. The child was looking desperate and equally sad. The so called rescue operation will be a punishment for her if the house owners statement is true and it also will be a punishment for the girl who is comepelled to stay with child welfare committee.

Wait till the brothers statement before commenting anything on this issue.

Please don't give much preference on Mr.Nagesh Nayaks statements. Lets try to help out the childs problem if she is in real trouble.

Though it is hard to accept still child labour is rampant all over India. Whether the employers are blue collared Babus or the Business Communities, they all violate the child labour rules and charged only if they are caught. On the other hand for the extreme poor families who have many mouths to feed the earnings from the child labour are their extra incomes. The new world order is favouring to squeeze the poor to make them poorer and support the rich to make them richer.
There has been no uniform measure of poverty in India. The Planning Commission of India has accepted the Tendulkar Committee report which says that 37% of people in India live below the poverty line (BPL).
The Arjun Sengupta Report (from National Commission for Enterprises in the Unorganized Sector) states that 77% of Indians live on less than 20 a day. The N.C. Saxena Committee report states that 50% of Indians live below the poverty line.
A study by the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative using a Multi-dimensional Poverty Index (MPI) found that there were 64.50 Crores poor living under the MPI in India, 42.10 Crores of whom are concentrated in eight North Indian and East Indian states of Bihar, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. This number is higher than the 41 Crores poor living in the 26 poorest African nations.

I fully agree with John mangalore.not long ago, when there were too many children in the house, they were sent to mumbai to work in the house just for Rs 50 to 100 a month, with left over food fed to the servent and making them to work nearly 16 hours to 20 hours.thankfully those days are gone. still people are trying to bring in servents and keep them in the house making them to work day and night. spacially the children.I there fore request every one who sees that their neighbour or relitive who employ the child must report to the police. further please make sure the child goes to school and get educated. this way the child may one day be greatfull to the person who helped her or him to get educated.once our socitey is educated and knows the rights of human being, we will not have slaves for rich people.

Dear friends, there are a number of child welfare centers run by catholic Christian nuns and even by some lay people in Mangalore. There is no need for any child to be abandoned and to be working at the age of studying. Nearly 100 such poor and orphan children are being looked after in our own Seon Ashram in Kanajar where they are not only provided comfortable shelter but also provided quality English medium education and we are willing to take more. However, in the case in question, parents or brothers want to exploit children for their monetary needs at the expense of child's future. Parents need to be educated the if they cannot take care of child's welfare and education, they should handover the child to reputed and reliable welfare centers and not to make a living out of child labor. Regards

Government is not taking care of our below poverty line families, if Christian organizations take initiative to help them vaanara sainya military break the churches claiming christians  do it in the intention of conversion. Helping poor is not our culture as per human sainya but stealing Indian mining property and making money is our  sainya’s agenda. If not why sena, dhala, rss not raised voice and fought against BJP?

How come CDOP not yet intending to do the needful onto the children's on the streets begging for food, shelter and clothing's. We could find minimum of 50-60 children's below 10-13 on streets begging for money and food, in UDUPI CITY & SERVICE BUS-STAND. Think about it so called CDOP.

Where is minority/Majority here ? Both, the employer and the employee, are form same community. However, irony is that the brother brought his little sister along when he came for treatment why not either of his parents or a brother ?

Moreover, the complaint was that there were about 5 - 6 child labours but just one was found. What happened to others ? Anyway, nice that she is out of there now. It would be nice if she can continue her studies.
