Sri Lanka to Free More Tamil Rebels

Colombo, Nov 17 (IANS): More former Tamil Tiger rebels will be released from prison to mark the second anniversary of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa's second term in office.

"The group will be selected from the remaining 680 former combatants who are in different rehabilitation centers in the northern parts of the country," Banduala Jayatillake of the Rehabilitation Bureau told Xinhua.

He said most of them have completed the prescribed period of rehabilitation. The release ceremony is scheduled to be held in Jaffna in the war-torn northern peninsula Nov 27.

The former rebels have undergone various vocational training during the rehabilitation period.

During and after the final phase of the war, which ended in May 2009, some 11,700 militants were arrested and sent to rehabilitation camps.
