Udupi, Sep 4: The state government has decided to withhold the Teachers' Day Award originally given to Ramakrishna B J, principal of the Government Pre-University College in Kundapur, due to a controversy.
The decision to honour Ramakrishna with the state-level 'Best Principal Award' faced objections from 'progressive' groups.
The controversy dates back to an incident two years ago, when the principal enforced a ban on female students wearing hijabs, following government orders.
A photograph of the incident, showing students being stopped at the college gate, went viral and led to a significant debate.
In response to the objections and mounting pressure, the state government has chosen to withhold the award.
