Mangaluru, Sep 6: Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner (DC) Mullai Muhilan clarified that the order passed on July 26, allowing the operation of electric auto-rickshaws (E-autos) throughout the district without area restrictions, cannot be revoked.
Speaking at a meeting with auto-rickshaw owners and drivers held at the DC's office on Thursday, Muhilan said, “This order was issued within the legal framework, following the guidelines of the Union government and a directive from the high court. Those concerned may seek further clarification through an appeal in a higher court."
He added, "The union government has granted free permits for E-autos to operate without any city (Zone-1) or rural (Zone-2) restrictions. This is being implemented across Karnataka, including in Mangaluru, with similar provisions in Bengaluru. However, restrictions have been imposed in Tamil Nadu. If such restrictions are to be implemented here, they must be enforced at the state government level. Auto-rickshaws drivers in Chikkamagaluru have already appealed to the state government for restrictions similar to those in Tamil Nadu."
