Bangalore: Santosh Hegde Calls for Accountability in Media

Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Nov 20: Former Karnataka Lokayukta N Santosh Hegde has called for accountability in media, and said that there should laws to keep the media in check.

Expressing his concerns over corrupt practices such as 'paid news', Hegde said that legal steps should be taken to regulate the media so that nobody can take advantage of it.

He also said that laws are necessary to put a lid on false stories that often lead to misrepresentation of reality and misguide the public.

Favouring some amount of regulation over the media, Hegde said that many a time media is used by vested interests, which is not a good sign.

He also lashed out at the newspaper that published a statement from former Lokayukta SP Madhukar Shetty in which the latter had made accusations of corruption within the Lokayukata agency.

"Is it honest journalism to release the story four months later? You suddenly choose to publish at a point of time when it suits certain people. If that's the motivation, would it be fair journalism?," Hegde demanded.

You are right, media is reponsible for several issues hapening around.
Now a days if you pay huge money to Electronic media they will broadcast whatever you want. DO you people remember, few months back every day on a news channel advertisement(Interviewed by MS.TABASSUM) about DR.KHAN,Versova,DR & Scientist-"One Medicne for all sickness". Finally people lost their life & complained against him. Now he is behind bars. At present I have seen another channel started similar advertisement for "SANDISIDDI", main host is Jakkie Shroff & customers are all ex-film stars & TV artists (No job Actors acting on advertisement now). This is our media ready to accept such advertisement for money even though they know it is fraud. Now a days most of the high value products published thru TV media, publish that if not satisfied you will get refund. Do you think company will accept back the product after partly used. It might cost double the value of the product to return the same to supplier as courier charges. This is India .

There has to be some Regualtory Control & Accountability over the Indian "Print" and "Television" Media.
Just take the recent example of a famous TV News Channel for wrongly showing the picture of a Supreme Court Judge just for.. few seconds!!! in the past.
And for their shock what Court Verdict they got in their favour!!!
"Only" - Rupees 100 Crore" to be deposited in Court!!!
Democracy or Freedom to Press or TV Media should not be misused or before publishing some "Planted Stories" or say Tarnishing some one's Name or Reputation should not be compromised!!!
We must support this cause with Justice Santosh Hegde.
"Sir this applies to the Currupt Judges Of Our Democratic India too"!!!

You are right Mr. Hegde, every news channel has some breaking news (silly news) 24 x 7.
Media has to be responsible and read between the lines the objective of some people before creating news.
One colored personality from Karnataka is always in the news for announcing huge donations from public money to temples and then poses for photographs with Saints, Sadus and Swamis.
We know his cunning motives but the press should also understand and curb such publicity stunts.
The press reports a particular event but at the same time it is the responsibility of the press to culminate the event and let people know what happed after that. Example….
One girl a budding athlete committed suicide and one Muslim boy was arrested. What happened after that?
One person was arrested vandalizing a church………. The list is endless.

I have high regard for Mr.Santosh Hegde and Mr.Pinto for their honesty. We have a strong judicial system and the judiciary is supposed put lid on false practices by way of publishing false fabricated stories which misguide the public. Is our judiciary is corrupt in contolling paid news from these corrupt News agencies,TV channels and print and online media? How can we have accountability when most of the judges are corrupt and partial?

MR.HEGDE, I FULLY AGREE WITH U THAT , MEDIA SHOULD BE MORE HONEST, N ACCOUNTABLE, IN REPORTING. THIS IS TRUE TO THE REPORT OF THE PUBLISHED COMMENTS OF MADHUKAR SHETTY. MEDIA ALSO HAS GIVEN UNDUE PUBLICITY TO ANNA HAZARES AGITATION LIKE A RUNNING COMMENTORY. IT WAS SO DIGUSTING . MEDIA THEN THOUGHT THAT THE WHOLE WORLD WAS SLEEPING, AS ALL THE TIME IT WASTHE NEWS OF ONLY ANNA AND HIS TEAM, AND NOTHING ELSE.BESIDES IT WAS ONE UPMANSHIP WITH DIFFERENT CHANNELS. I WOULD HAVE APRICIATED YOU TO HAVE THEN SAID WHAT YOU R SAYING NOW ABOUT MEDIA.

If anything, even media, if not under some strict control may go out of hand. There should be a statutory body to take action against the paid channels and the media that spread false rumors that sometime flare communal violence. In print media The Hindu is the only newspaper that writes stuff that is readable. A snag in Kiran Bedi’s flight becomes frontline news in Times of India. The media should come out with impartial progressive and burning news and not yellow-journalism and Pagte-3 news. Jai Hind!

Mr Hegde with all due respect to you, why you are  blaming the media now, doesn't matter whether the news broke out today or 6 months ago as long as the allegation is true. Who leaked the mining report to media before sending it to the government?, what is the reason behind it?. Mr Hegde, with all due respect to you, check your own accountability before blaming the media.

There is so much competition in journalism that everyone wants to publish the sensational story first, without verifying the facts. If later, they find it is false, then they publish apology in small letters the next day. Unfortunately even the common man likes to read something sensational.
