Dumping Waste in Open a Criminal Offence in Kerala

Kochi, Nov 21 (IANS): A division bench of the Kerala High Court Monday directed the state police to register criminal cases against all those who dump waste on the streets.

The bench of Justice C.N. Ramachandran Nair and Justice P.S. Gopinathan asked all the local self-governing bodies in the state to ensure that no garbage was dumped in the open.

The court was hearing a batch of cases relating to poor waste management in Kerala.

The order comes close on the heels of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) blaming the Kerala State Pollution Control Board, the urban local bodies and state government for not managing the waste generated in the country's most literate state.
