No Political Agenda Behind Move to Split State, Say Mayawati

Lucknow, Nov 21 (IANS): Chief Minister Mayawati Monday denied any political motive behind the assembly resolution favouring the division of Uttar Pradesh into four separate states.

"There is no political agenda behind the resolution to divide the state into four states," Mayawati told reporters about the move that comes ahead of the 2012 assembly polls.

Mayawati said the state government had forwarded the proposal earlier to the central government, but as there was no response, her government had to get an approval of the state cabinet and then a resolution from the assembly.

The assembly cleared the proposal Monday amid strong protests from the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party and the Samajwadi Party.
