Mangaluru: Onam celebration held at St Agnes College (Autonomous)

Mangaluru, Sep 23: Onam was celebrated at St Agnes (Autonomous) College, themed 'THARANGAM', which took place on September 21, with colourful spectacle and grandeur. It was beautifully showcased depicting Kerala's rich cultural heritage while fostering the community spirit among students and faculty. The festivities commenced with the rhythmic beats of the chenda, creating an electrifying atmosphere as faculty members were escorted to the venue.

Sr Dr M Venissa AC, the principal expressed her views on the significance of Onam to focus on peace, harmony and togetherness which needs to prevail among us to have a strong bond within the society and various communities. We need to encourage all the festivals to enhance the rich enriching legacy and tradition of our country.

Cultural performances were a major highlight of the celebration, featuring captivating Thiruvathira dances performed by both undergraduate and postgraduate students. These performances, along with various songs and dances, celebrated the spirit of the festival and reflected the students' dedication to preserving their cultural traditions.

The celebration also included engaging competitions that brought out the competitive spirit among participants, such as tug of war, lemon and spoon races, breaking the pot, sack races, and a pookalam were conducted. All participating students showcased their creativity through intricate floral designs.

The programme began with an invocation of a heartfelt prayer song and the traditional lighting of the lamp symbolizing the dispelling of darkness and welcoming of knowledge and prosperity. A warm welcome speech highlighted the Onam as a festival of unity and abundance, setting a positive tone for the day’s events.

The event was skilfully compered by Aldrin from I BA, Shobha Arun, HOD, department of Malayalam welcomed the gathering and the vote of thanks was proposed by Ann Riya George of III BA and Malavika of III BCOM ACCA, expressing gratitude to all participants and organizers. All the staff members and students were present for this occasion.

Overall, 'THARANGAM' Onam celebration was a resounding success, strengthening the bonds within the college community and leaving participants with cherished memories and a profound sense of unity.
