Kundapur, Sep 24: Fishermen from the Nadadoni and Gangolli regions of Byndoor united to block over a hundred bull trawl fishing boats, expressing their anger over the issue. Bull trawl fishing, which takes place along the coastal areas, is believed to be destroying marine life, particularly affecting fish breeding. The traditional Nadadoni fishermen claim that their livelihoods are being severely impacted by bull trawl and light fishing methods. They return empty-handed from fishing trips, risking their lives at sea.

Nagesh Kharvi, president of the Byndoor Nadadoni Fishermen’s Association, demanded strict action against those conducting illegal fishing. He stated, “Despite holding meetings with Nadadoni fishermen from Mangaluru to Karwar and appealing to the government to ban bull trawl fishing, the trawlers continue to operate in about 45 positions and 29 longitudes. This has sparked protests from the Nadadoni fishermen, who brought it to the attention of authorities. However, no action has been taken, causing great distress for the traditional fishermen.”

He further warned that if the situation continues, many Nadadoni fishermen will lose their livelihoods and be left on the streets. “Bull trawl and light fishing are unscientific and banned in India by the Supreme Court and the central government. Even so, some continue to carry out these illegal fishing activities in secret. The concerned authorities must take strict action, including revoking licenses and imposing fines, to stop this illegal activity. If the situation persists, it could lead to clashes between bull trawlers and Nadadoni fishermen,” he cautioned.

The fishermen have urged ministers and the government to take appropriate action before the situation escalates into a conflict between the two groups. Leaders from three districts are preparing to protest if no action is taken.

Present at the meeting were Suresh Kharvi, president of the Maravanthe Fishermen’s Service Committee; Venkataramana Kharvi, president of the Kodiyeri Zone; former president Madan Kumar; state union secretary Yashwanth Kharvi; president of the Maha Ishwar Seva Samiti, Ram Kharvi; and president of the Ranebale Union, Venkataramana Kharvi, along with members from all zones.
