Mangaluru: Inauguration of Rangers and Rovers unit held at YIASCM

Mangaluru, Sep 28: The Rangers and Rovers unit at Yenepoya Institute of Arts, Science, Commerce, and Management (YIASCM) was officially inaugurated on September 25. The event featured an engaging orientation session on self-defence, marking a significant step in empowering students with essential life skills.

B Mohammed Thumbe, district commissioner of Bharath Scouts and Guides Dakshina Kannada, graced the occasion as the chief guest, emphasizing the importance of discipline and self-reliance in youth development.

“The youth of today must be equipped not only with academic knowledge but also with life skills that foster independence, resilience, and confidence. The Rangers and Rovers Unit is a platform that nurtures such qualities, and I am confident that the self-defence training will empower students to face challenges with courage and strength," he added.

The event was further honoured by the presence of guest of honour Gracian Sequiera, Lt colonel and commanding officer of the 18/Kar Battalion National Cadet Corps, Mangaluru, who highlighted the role of physical and mental preparedness in personal safety. “In today’s world, being prepared both mentally and physically is essential for personal safety and success. Self-defense is not just about protection; it is about building confidence and the ability to stand strong in the face of adversity. Programmes like the Rangers and Rovers unit help foster these values in our youth, shaping them into capable and responsible citizens.", he advised the young Rovers and Rangers.

Distinguished invitees, including renowned international karate players and self-defence instructors, Dr Gladwin Pamela Fernandez, Bharathiraj and Kishore, led the interactive self-defence orientation, imparting valuable techniques and insights. They were joined by Ganesh K, state assistant programme officer for Scouts and Guides Karnataka, who lent his expertise to the proceedings.

Presiding over the session was Dr Arun A Bhagwath, principal of YIASCM, along with vice principals Dr Shareena P and Dr Jeevan Raj. Other notable attendees included Dr Sakeena Nasser, head of the department of humanities and social sciences; Dr Savitha, ME coordinator; Anandvelu, physical education director; and Dr Deekshitha Prashanth, assistant professor; the Rangers and Rovers programme officers, students, and sports team coordinators also attended the event, making it a well-rounded gathering.

The event concluded on a high note, with attendees expressing their appreciation for the informative and practical self-defence session, which not only promoted physical safety but also fostered confidence and resilience among students.
