Mangalore, Nov 27: Dr Christy Fernandez, IAS, secretary to the president of India asserted that there need not be contradiction between stake holders and share holders if they are considered as the two wheels of an enterprise. As the good old saying goes, business is for making money but the Rachana awardees have shown that business or any undertaking can also be a humane enterprise.

He spoke after conferring the Rachana Awards 2011 on five noted achievers at a programme held in Milagres Jubilee Hall here on Sunday November 27.

The awards were conferred on Sr Maria Goretti, (outstanding woman of the year), Paul Tauro, (agriculturist of the year), Richard C Rodrigues (entrepreneur of the year), C T J Gonsalves (professional of the year) and Lawrence D’Souza (NRI entrepreneur of the year) for their excellent achievements in their respective field.

Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, bishop of Mangalore in his presidential address said that the awardees have set a great example and are models to the community and to the society as a whole. He also asserted that there was a need for recognizing more such people in the community as the government had not done it enough. He called upon people to love and help the poor and see the reflection of god in their faces. He later honored the donors.

Marcel Monteiro, president of Rachana handed over a model of a house and a cheque to the bishop for construction of houses for the poor.

Accepting the honour, Sr Maria Goretti said that she was grateful to Rachana for encouraging her in reaching out to the poorest. She also thanked her religious congregation for their support.

Richard C Rodrigues dedicated the award to all those who were working with him for their commitment.

Senior chartered accountant C T J Gonsalves said that Daijiworld had brought global recognition to Rachana awards.

Lawrence D'Souza said that he was grateful to all his supporters and well wishers.

Lavita Lobo and Rosanne Gomes mesmerized the audience earlier with songs. A welcome dance was performed by students of St Agnes College. Titus Noronha gave the introductory address. Marcel Monteiro welcomed. Raymond D’Cunha, secretary, Rachana, delivered the vote of thanks. Melita Pinto compered the programme.
