Mangalore, Nov 28:
'Sustantivo 2011' a two-day national-level inter-collegiate fest hosted by St Agnes College was off to a brilliant start on Monday November 28.

Lakshmi Kumaran, DGM, MRPL inaugurated the programme. Sr Prem D'souza, principal, St Agnes College presided. Earlier, an eye-catching procession was taken out to the venue.

In her address, Lakshmi Kumaran said that 'Sustantivo' is a unique fest as it brings together students from all streams, be it arts, commerce, management or science. Usually colleges have different fests for each of the departments, but here we see a kind of unity, she said.

She also urged the students to follow the right path in life, do good to others and become role models to the society.

She added that in the present day scenario, the idea of education had been reduced to gaining a degree, but in reality education encompasses a lot more, from gaining knowledge to honing ones skills.

Sr Prem said that the fest aims to inculcate values of team work by bringing students of different fields together on one platform. The students will not only get a chance to exhibit their talents, but also share their ideas and boost their confidence level, she added.

More than 20 colleges are taking part in the event. The fest is divided into arts, management/commerce and science faculties.

Mock press, tattoo making, quiz, vegetable carving, face painting, variety show, creative writing, among others are part of the day’s activity. The highlight of the fest is fund-raising fete, organized as part of the centenary celebrations of the institution by the alumni association of the College. The funds raised by the alumni will be utilized for the education of the needy students.

Prof. Malini Hebbar, staff convener, Sustantivo- 2011 welcomed. Soudamini Chandarana, student president, delivered the vote of thanks.

The valedictory will be held on November 29. General events like bus maze, song spoof, spin in tale, RJ, cooking without fire, report making will also be held.

I have vivid and pleasant memories of St. Agnes. To an extent St. Agnes my Alma Mater too. I studied at St. Agnes in the K.G. way back in mid twenties. My sister Mary Gonsalves (Rev. Mother Carmela) was amongst the first from St. Agnes in the early thirties. Again my sister - Rev. Sister Hedwige was a Principal in the seventies and during Rev. Sister aloysias' time I was the V.P. of The P.T.A.

I am happy that St. Agnes has forged ahead and has made rapid strides towards progress.

I congratulate Sr Prem D'souza, the present principal who is greatly responsible to get the best out of students.

I am proud to be associated with St. Agnes in some measure. I am still in touch with Mother Agatha Mary, Sister Linette and other sisters and am glad that Sister Aloysius is back in India after a great a wonderful stint in Africa for nearly two decades.

My good wishes are and will always be with St. Agnes.

    Joe Gonsalves
