Udupi, Oct 6: Udupi deputy commissioner Dr Vidyakumari has stated that boats from other states that illegally enter the district's ports will face maximum fines and confiscation. She directed the fisheries department and coast guard to conduct joint operations to address this issue.

During a meeting held on Saturday with officials from the fisheries department, leaders from the fishermen community, and office bearers from various fishing organizations, several issues were discussed, including the illegal entry of out-of-state boats, bull trawling, and light fishing.

Dr Vidyakumari emphasized that the current fine of Rs 5,000 for illegally entering the district’s waters is insufficient. To enforce the law effectively, a fine five times the value of the fish on board should be imposed, and the boat should be confiscated. She also mentioned that a proposal to amend the current law to increase fines will be sent to the state government soon.

SP Dr Arun added, "It is incorrect to say the government lacks the power to prevent illegal activities. The law provides opportunities for action if it is properly understood and implemented."

Fishermen leaders urged a strict ban on bull trawling and light fishing. They stressed that such regulations should apply to all ports along the coast, with a unified policy for the region. Additionally, they recommended reviewing policies followed in other states to ensure no issues arise for local fishermen.

Dr Vidyakumari assured that prohibited fishing practices will not be permitted, but also emphasized that traditional fishermen should not face difficulties due to these regulations.
