Kasargod, Oct 7: In a tragic incident, an autorickshaw driver hanged himself at his residence in city after being distressed over the police seizing his vehicle four days ago.

The deceased has been identified as Abdul Sattar (55), originally from Karnataka. He was found dead on Monday, October 7 evening at his rented quarters on Railway Station Road in Kasargod. Sattar had been living there for the past three years and was running an autorickshaw business in the city.

Four days ago, his autorickshaw was seized by the police near Geetha Junction in the city, allegedly for being parked in a way that obstructed traffic. A notice was issued, and the vehicle was taken into police custody.

It is reported that Sattar had taken a loan to purchase the autorickshaw and had repeatedly approached the police station, requesting the return of his vehicle. Despite his appeals, the police did not release it. Other autorickshaw drivers in the city had also gone to the Kasargod DySP office to make a plea on his behalf. Although assurances were given, the city police, citing various reasons, did not return the autorickshaw, which led to growing frustration.

On Monday evening, Sattar was found hanging at his residence. Following the incident, autorickshaw drivers in the city stopped operating and staged a protest. They also laid siege to the city police station.

In connection with Abdul Sattar’s suicide, Kasargod city sub-inspector P Anoop, who was accused of mishandling the situation, has been transferred to Chandera Police Station. DSP D Shilpa summoned Anoop to the office and issued the transfer order. The decision was made after accusations were raised against Anoop in relation to the incident.
