Udupi District Working Journalists Association to hold ‘Silver Sports Fest’ on Oct 22

Udupi, Oct 16: The Udupi District Working Journalists Association will organize its annual sports event, the ‘Silver Sports Fest’ on October 22 at the Udupi district stadium in Ajjarkad, as part of its silver jubilee celebrations. This was announced by the association's president, Rajesh Shetty Alevoor, during a press conference held at the Udupi Press Club on Wednesday.

Speaking at the event, Rajesh Shetty stated that the association has planned to conduct this year’s sports fest in a grand and unique manner to mark the silver jubilee. The event will begin at 9 am with the flag hoisting by Rajesh Shetty Alevoor, president of the Udupi District Working Journalists' Association. The sports fest will be inaugurated by Dr Roshan Kumar Shetty, assistant director of Udupi District sports and youth empowerment department.

Dr H S Ballal, pro-chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, will officially inaugurate the sports fest. A parade of members from various taluk associations, led by journalist Deepak Jain, will also take place, and Udupi deputy commissioner Dr Vidya Kumari will accept the honorary salute. Journalists Prajwal Ameen and Anil Kairangala, led by Raju Kharvi, will light the sports torch, which will be handed over by Udupi District Athletics Association president Hariprasad Rai. The event will be presided over by Rajesh Shetty Alevoor.

Prominent guests at the event will include Dr Avinash Shetty, medical director of Kasturba Hospital, Manipal; Uday Kumar, director of Yashashwi Fish Mill; and Rayappa, commissioner of Udupi Municipality. The silver jubilee committee director, Shareef Karkala; state committee member Kiran Manjanabailu; and national committee member Arun Kumar Shirur will also be present.

The sports fest will feature a range of activities such as races, long jump, relay, tug-of-war, pot-breaking competitions, sports bike races, swimming, and other recreational competitions. The events will be conducted in three categories: below 40 years, above 40 years, and above 50 years.

Winners will be honoured with medals during a special ceremony. Additionally, they will receive awards at the silver jubilee closing ceremony, which is scheduled for November.

The press conference was attended by the association's general secretary, Nazir Polya; treasurer, Umesh Marpalli; and state committee member, Kiran Manjanabailu.
