Mangalore Church Attacks: State Cabinet Withdraws All Cases Against Christians

Mangalore Church Attacks: State Cabinet Withdraws All Cases Against Christians

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore/Bangalore

Mangalore/Bangalore, Dec 1:
The Karnataka State Cabinet on Thursday December 1 took a major decision of withdrawing cases filed against 338 innocent Christian youth in 2008.

It took more than 3 years and concerted efforts on the parts of IFKCA, Archbishop of Bangalore Dr Bernad Moras, Bishop of Mangalore Dr Aloysius Paul Dsouza and a few other organizations, the laity and the clergy to apprise and request the government to withdraw these cases wrongly filed against the Catholic youth following the events of the aftermath of the attack on churches in Mangalore and Udupi in 2008.

Though the state government had taken a decision long ago to withdraw the cases and had assured various delegations about its intent to do so, it was waiting for the cabinet approval for formally withdrawing the cases.

The withdrawal of these cases has come as a big relief to all those youth against whom the cases were pending as it was a big burden that affected their studies, their everyday life and career prospects.

It is also a moment of contentment for Ronald Colaco, chairman of International Federation of Karnataka Christian Association (IFKCA) and its members whose consistent and steadfast efforts paved the way for the state cabinet to take this most awaited decision.

The Law Minister of the State S Suresh Kumar in a press conference confirmed the decision taken by the cabinet in this direction and said the government took the decision as a result of the concerted efforts IFKCA chairman and its members who worked studiously and painstakingly to enable the cabinet to take the decision so soon.

The long awaited cabinet decision to withdraw the cases of 338 innocent Christian youth against whom cases were filed as a consequence of the retaliatory action following the attack on places of worship, is a big respite to the affected youth who now feel they are free from a big load they carried these three years.

The Cabinet decision is also a big relief for all those leaders who worked zealously in the past three years to get them released. Their untiring efforts have proved fruitful though it has taken 3 years for the government to arrive at the decision as it had to follow certain procedures to do so. The decision would have come at least a month early but for the elections in the Bellary which made it obligatory on the state not to take any major decisions till elections were over, as part of the Election Commission’s code of conduct. In fact, many prominent Catholic leaders individually and collectively and through organizations had exerted tremendous pressure on the government to withdraw these cases. Even the Catholic clergy made its own efforts in this direction.

IFKCA chairman Ronald Colaco had led two delegations this year alone to the chief ministers and other cabinet ministers of the state requesting them to withdraw the cases and also to express unhappiness over the delay in taking a decision. The cabinet decision was not easy to come as the files pertaining to all the cases from different police stations where the cases were registered had to reach the head office of IGP and from there to ADGP’s office and finally to the office of DGP. These files were then required to be sent to the home secretary and from there to the office of the home minister. The home minister then had to forward it to the law minister for legal opinion.

Following pressure from IFKCA home minister R Ashok had instructed special officer Kempe Gowda to keep a track of file movement of these cases as per the procedures, from respective local police stations till the office of the home ministry. It was IFKCA chairman and its members across the state who played a colossal role in ensuring that the relevant files moved from the respective police stations to the final destination without undue delay. The quick movement of all the files from the source to the destination enabled the home ministry to prepare the decision for the approval of the cabinet. As such, it was easy for the cabinet to take a quick decision.

It may be remembered that following the unfortunate events that followed the church attack in Mangalore and Udupi in 2008, the Catholic youth reacted to the attack on the places of worship which was nothing but reactionary, resulting in the clash between them and the police. In these incidents the police had registered cases against many innocent youth who suffered all these three years by attending the court cases and also by running from pillar to post requesting withdrawal of these cases. Most of these youth had to suffer a great deal and over the years lost the zest to fight the cases as most of them had to forego their studies and good career prospects.

Eminent community leader and NRI businessman Ronald Colaco and his institution IFKCA was instrumental in playing a pivotal role in coming to the rescue of these youth by providing monetary and psychological help for these youngsters who were arrested after filing cases. Despite positive responses from the erstwhile chief minister B S Yeddyurappa and his cabinet colleagues and also from the present chief minister and home minister, it was an exasperating moment for everyone concerned till the decision came through. He led many delegations to the former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa, former home ministers Dr V S Acharya, present home minister R Ashok and current chief minister D V Sadananda and impressed upon them to withdraw the cases filed against the innocent youth of the community. Delegation members of IFKCA included Denis D'Silva, convenor IFKCA, Jossy Lobo, president IFKCA Belehonur Roshan Castelino, president of Sparsha Social Service Centre, Michael Baptist, secretary, IFKCA, Stanly K Bangarpet, and others.

The state government had appointed Justice Somshekar Commission headed by Justice B K Somshekar who submitted his report in January 2012. His report was a complete U-turn from the earlier interim report he had prepared and submitted. Though the report gave a clean chit to the government IFKCA and its members exerted pressure on the government from time to time to withdraw the cases. It is the hard work done by altruistic individuals which helped the cabinet to take the landmark decision.

Ronald Colaco thanks CM and Cabinet

President of IFKCA Ronald Colaco whose efforts paved the way for ending the rigmarole has thanked Karnataka chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda and his cabinet for fulfilling the promise given to the people and organizations that approached the government time and again. In a statement to Daijiworld he said the chief minister has obliged to the numerous delegations and requests of IFKCA to revoke the cases. He expressed hope that the government would look sympathetically into the requests of the members on various issues concerning the Catholic community.

Mangalore Bishop Welcomes Cabinet Decision

Mangalore bishop Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza, in a media release, welcomed the decision taken by the state cabinet to withdraw all the cases against Christians in connection with the 2008 church attacks.

He conveyed thanks and good wishes to chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda and the government ministries and officials involved in the process.

Welcoming the decision, he requested the government to pass an order in this regard and ensure that it is implemented at the earliest.

I totally agree with Mr. Satheesh Kunder, he is right if you go to any schools and colleges run by Christian missionaries they never teach on Christian religion but they teach well discipline's. Mr. Dinesh Poojary, if you say there are enough proof of conversion's can you please prove one out of it. Well for past 10yrs the Christian population is decreasing. What do you say for this? Well, I can prove you many cases were Christian are converted to Hindus can you prove me one were Hindu converted to christian?

Please read by comments before replying. Don't blindly send comments.

Not all institutions are doing conversions. But there are some institutions. That they need to stop.

I have studied Chemistry book by V.S Lasrado, Maths book by S.S Bosco of Saint Aloysius. I am grateful to them.

We have enough proof of conversion activities carried out in some institutions and missionaries. That we do not want.

    Dear Mr. Dinesh Poojary, Kundapura/Bengaluru,

Myself and my children got educated from Catholic institutions. We were looked after as equals among students without any discrimination based on religion, caste or creed. Other than good education we were taught to be disciplined and good human beings. At no point of time religion was imposed on us. When catholics had Religion period we were taught moral science.

Why so much hatred in you? Why you are being misled by Sangh Parivar who are spreading hatred among religion only for their political survival.

Let us be good human beings first. Let us keep religion as a personal matter and live together as human beings.

I'm sure a true convert who has willingly accepted the faith in his/her conscience through an indepth study and understanding of the scriptures will never ever file such a complaint.

Finally it’s all over, thanks to DVS. But I like the comments of Mr. Arun Fernandes, Mangalore/ Bangalore for unfolding the truth. Some of our own Christian Brothers denied traveling to other countries just because they were part of protesters which was turned ugly because of stone throwing incidents by few miscreants. We have to come and pray together when there is a stone throwing or attacking incidents on other religious places irrespective of our religion and cast and beg with God to forgive them and give them a lesson the way they deserved. Whenever there is incidents like this, do not give much media hype instead just clean the area and leave the place as it is so that outside people or next generation can see the vandals done by our own people and person concerned should feel the pain on their hated act

Its Bjp who put the cases and then its BJP which has withdrawn.Withdrawing is a positive sign and thanks who worked for it particularly Ronie. But this withdrawal noway means BJP is anticommunal. The attacks on religious churches was unholy but violence was not so much comparitively. Attacks on tribal christians in orissa was both unholy and barberic. Attacks on minorities in gujarath was most barberic. I do not give any certificate to Bjp as long as its agenda is communal which is dangerous.

God Bless DVS. This is the best thing he did which will be pleasing to God n Christian community. If Yeddy had done it he would not have lost his C.M. Chair. Any way one promise DVS has fullfilled and we all Christians are thankful to him. As per some persuedo comments. I want to tell them, they need to differentiate bw Catholics n other Christians sects. Catholic churches are attacked in Manglore n there is no proof of forcefull conversion in any of our church. Even if any Christian accepts Hinduism we won't force him to return, nor we attack any of Hindu temple. Our religion doesn't teach us such things. We have faith in our religion n we are not worried any one will convert us. Bcz of these solid Christian values if any one want to accept religion we can't stop it. God bless DVS God bless our Hindu brothers n sisters. There are 5% christians now in India but another 15% are followers Christianity.

What is so great the BJP has done? They were the ones to attack the places of worship and beat-up the innocents and harass them for the last three years, using the supposedly impartial police and judiciary. It is the un-relenting pressure, persuation and hard work or Mr.Colaco, IFKCA,the Reverend Bishops, the clergy and all the other good people that this has come about. The Gov.has to be condemned for all the false reports (Shame-a-Sekara) and for taking so long, even after umpteen promises. Any true patriot and good hearted person, irrespective of caste or religion, will not vote for such a Gov.again, as this is not the question as to who was attacked but because the fence itself had destroyed the harvest.

    @ Dinesh Poojary
    Dear Friend,
There is a strong misunderstanding among our Hindu brethren and its our moral responsibility to clear their doubts.
First of all the church attacks were mostly done on ROMAN CATHOLIC (RC) churches. Firstly we RC's don't preach or support conversions. We too have strong objections to the conversion angle. These mischievous deeds are of factions and people who call themselves Faith Gospel, New Life, Jehovah messengers etc etc and these people indulge in these activities of going from house to house or they hold meetings in some particular house and force people to believe Jesus.
We RC's don't do that. However all the churches, hospitals, schools, colleges are buildings owned by the RC community....For the wrong doings of these stupid factions our buildings are targeted.
Dinesh you are free to walk into any RC school, college or hospital and ask the Hindus admitted there whether we indulge in teaching about Christ and conversions....It is an open challenge I'm giving you.If you find we are doing it then you can get back to me with the name of the institution where you have found such a thing and we assure you we will take action...
But please don't not make false blames and break our places of worship....Know the truth before you cast a stone....However if you find these fictitious & false groups preaching somewhere in the name of Christianity, please let us also know and we will join you in teaching them a lesson they will remember for life...

For some of those people here who simplify their thinking that the issue of 'illegal' conversions are just like 'illegal' mining by Reddy Bros, or like 'illegal' grabbing / denotification of land by mafia and yeddy & co, - then you are simply confusing yourselves by your naiveity, stupidity and simplistic thinking.

If the allure of money is a motivating factor for everything done illegally, then, a lot of problems in this world would have been resolved by the payment of money and Colombia, Mexico, and all the Gulf Countries would have been the major superpowers of the world, because of their natural resouces like (cocaine) in colombia/Mexico and crude oil in Gulf countries.

If somebody wants to convert, it is not because of any money, on the contrary, it is because they are fed up of their generational curse of living under the brahmin / upper caste wrath.

Church is house for each and every christian. We come under the church as a single family.

Ur Bajarangadala people were waiting outside the permannur church to attack. Even some of the christian youths slept inside the church to protect it from being attacked. We were guarding the our house.

What work was there for police in church. They came in gang some were even accompanied by Bajrangadala activist.
If we dont protect our house our worship place then who will.

Thank you Cabinet for your decision. but no thanks too.
    1. Our youth were innocent, you all know it, yet without you withdrawing the cases, they had to suffer.
    2. Injustice was done to us, the youth retaliated (in whatever measure), only when we were attacked, you know this too, yet due to your political compulsions, you are unable to openly accept this truth.
    3. You taught us naive christians, how one must be schemy, not-trusting - a lesson entire mass learnt at one go, would have been difficult otherwise.
    4. We also learnt, goodness, love, charity, humanity, service - all these are mere words in print, they can never be practiced desiring positive result, if at all results will be these, one has to be prepared for negative repurcussions.
5.Above all, we learnt, jealousy is the most powerful human emotion, unless we learn to arrest it, there can't be development in society. It happens within families, at workplace, institutions, and even in literate society.

Nice way to promote attacks on police. Govt has done a great disservice to police morale by revoking cases against people who attacked police with stones, sticks inside the church. I can never forget photos of stones and bottles accumulated on top of church to attack police by these so called "innocents"

By revoking these cases, government is sending a message to anti-social elements that it is ok to take law into own hands and attack law enforcement personnel.

    Well Done Mr. CM,

This Incident was an "Reaction" for an "Action", some what like GODRA, until and unless there is a ACTION, no would be bothered to take REACTION on it.. I think my dear Christian friends deserved to be to free from these cases...
However my request to every friends, kindly do not promote the idea of Conversion, this is what prompts some of the civilians to act against it, and ultimately encourages them to take action..Actually both these things are Wrong...

These cases, if come to trial, will never stand before the court for lack of evidence. Govt. saved its face by withdrawing them.

Justice will not be done unless and until those who behind the Church attack and those who brutalized the innocent protesters are punished. We need a CBI enquiry on Church attack.

I don't think there is anything debatable. If an outsider, or your troublesome neighbour instigates you in your house / temple with stones and insulting taunts against your religion or family, won't you retaliate? or will you be a mute spectator?

The long awaited decision has finally been taken and justice THOUGH DELAYED has now been done to the innocent people who were victims of atrocities committed during the earlier.

Indeed Ronald Colaco has taken a lot of interest in the pending case and all of us are grateful to him for his support and action. That apart we have seen Archbishop Bernard fighting for this cause and having confrontation with Yedurappa on several occasions earlier and interacting with the present Chief Minister on the issue and it must be a great relief for him that JUSTICE HAS NOT BEEN DONE EVEN THOUGHT DELAYED. Our Bishop A. . P. in Manhalore too have had several meetings on this issue and has fought for has flock. This is a day of triumph for all minorities.

A WORD OF KUDOS TO THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE SUFFERED. THEY HAVE SUFFERED FOR A CAUSE AND WE ARE GRATEFUL TO THEM. I am sure there will be resounding reception for them when they return to their homes TRIUMPHANTLY .

At last the Christian community in Mangalore will be relieved with this good news. We hope the Hindu fundamentalist and the radical organizations and their followers understand the value of the secular principles of our country and respect all religions to live in harmony and peace side by side. It’s also a warning to evangelical churches (like Pentecostal, seventh day Adventist, or Jehovah witnesses) who try to proselyte. These attacks would not have gone to such an extend and the Catholic Church would not have suffered in such a ignominious way if only these sects had stopped undertaking proselytizing activities and sowing seeds of hatred. Long live the Church, long live the secular principles of our great nation India.
