Abu Dhabi: Young Talents Steal the Show at Pearl Voice-Junior

Media Release

Abu Dhabi, Dec 3: The ‘Mothiam Porob’, the mega-show of talent galore presented by Pearls of Mangalore was held in the Auditorium of Abu Dhabi Indian School on Friday, December 2, 2011 from 3.30 pm. This programme was held to provide a platform for the new and the talented artists which has been one of the professed purposes of this forum. This time the ‘Mothiam Porob’ offered a combo presentation of events -Pearl Voice-Junior (mega event for children), release of maiden music CD “Amchem Sopon” from the house of POM, exhibition of new talents and entertainment by veteran singers, artists and musicians.

The entire programme was conducted in well-planned six parts. The show was anchored by three eminent Emceess-Uttam Menezes, Anil Pinto and Prem (Annu Bantwal).

The first part of the programme began with the prayer dance by Florence Pinto followed by UAE National Anthem which was presented through music and video. All children who had participated in the audition presented a group song after which they proceeded to the back of the auditorium on order to arrive in a grand procession.

Team leader of the POM, Alphonse Mendonsa, in his opening address, welcomed the guests and participants of the grand programme and requested parents of participants not to loose hope even if their child is not won. It is not winning or loosing that matters but participating and he thanked the parents for their dedication to encourage and train them over the last few months and made them enroll in this singing contest. He also thanked the main sponsors Richard Castelino, Ronald Pinto, Richard D’Souza who have supported them from the beginning of Pearls existence and that is from 2007 when Mothiam was formed. He was grateful for all other sponsors, well-wishers and Konkani community for attending this great grand finale of Pearl voice Junior contest and Mothiam Porob. This was followed by theme song sung by all Mothiam members. Thereafter, H.E. Bishop Paul Hinder’s’s message to Pearls of Mangalore was read by Anil Pinto in the absence of the Bishop for the programme. The names of the sponsors were readout.. Melvern Rickey Moras sang ‘Iskalacho Burgo’While on the back drop video was played.

Thereafter all the contestants approached the stage in a grand procession to the loud cheers of the audience. The procession had the glory of the Mangalorean trumpet band. The procession was led by the POM flag held by Ralph Pereira and Joshal Lobo.

After the preliminaries in the first part, the second part of the programme was quite interesting as children between the age groups of 8-10 years (sub Juniors) and 11-13 years (Juniors) exhibited their singing talent. Prior to the singing, each of the contestants was introduced and after their presentation, the Chief Judges gave his message. The Judges panel consisted of three, Henry D’Souza (Chief Judge), Maxim Pereira & Mrs. Cyrilla Sebastain. Henry D’Souza & Maxim Pereira had specially flown from India for this occasion.

Meanwhile, in between the contest, the main sponsors of the programme-Richard Castelino and Ronald Pinto were felicitated. Similarly, the judges were also honoured by offering them flowers and mementos. Participation Certificates were awarded to the participants.

At the end of the part two programme, Henry (Sangeeth Samrat) and Lolita Pinto sang the ever-green song of Henry D’Souza-“Ye Ye Katrina” while Adelle and Dion danced to the tune of the song adding spice to the song. Thereafter a skit by Rock Band titled “Boskambegar Special” was presented by Manoj Menezes and team. It was great exhibition of talent by the team. The team really rocked the audience.

Part three of the programme was devoted for felicitating the sponsors, support sponsors, well wishers and artists and musicians. Francis Fernandes of Cascia and Henry D’Souza were honored on the stage. At the end Maxim Pereira was felicitated and was crowned “Melody Star” by Pearls of Mangalore for his contribution to Konkani in the talent he was gifted with.

In part four of the programme, two songs-both duets- “Ami Dogi Sezari” sung by Henry and Maxim and “Margai” video presentation on the back drop duet while singers Ida and Maxim of POM kept the audience spell-bound.

Wholesome entertainment was reserved in the fifth part of the programme. Following the unveiling of the CD “Amchem Sopann”, four live songs from the CD were presented on the stage. These included “Ago Baye” by Rony Lobo, “Poilya Pausacho Suvaad” by Dony Pinto accompanied by a dance to the music of the song by Clarissa Fernandes and Karren Viegas, “Mog Amchoo Niskal” by Felix and Lolita and “Ghadyen Ghadi” by Rony D’Souza.

The sixth and penultimate part of the programme started with the vote of thanks by Ronald Lobo. The exciting part of the programme was the declaration of the results and award presentation ceremony. Here the heartbeat of the contestants was felt.

The winner of the Award “Pearl Voice- Sub-junior 2011 Sheldon Fernandes(chest No 4)

The winner of the Award “Pearl Voice-junior 2011 Nichole Pinto(chest No. 3)

2011 Runner-up –Ryan Vas (junior), Mclean Fernandes(sub-junior)

Apart from the prize money, on the floor Richard Castelino (Patron of POM) & family offered additional equal amount to the Winner from both categories. This announcement came as a surprise.

On the whole the ‘Mothiam Porob’ was an exciting evening which kept the houseful of audience in high spirit. It presented a platform to young singers to showcase their talents and make their parents and friends proud. The entertainment dished out by veteran singers, artists and musicians provided a wholesome entertainment to the audience. The music was provided by Prashant Sequeira and Team and Sound System was arranged by Broadway Team Abu Dhabi.

    Dear Pearls of Mangalore,
To avoid all misunderstandings and identify real talents please follow my humble suggestions for your next such event.
    1. In the judging criteria please give priority importance for singing and not dance. A sad sentimental song can not be presented with dance.
    2. Please such judges who are qualified in music. Just producing few albums dosent make one a qualified singer. The song sounds good because of the the music arranged by a qualified musician in the studio. These days many album producers/composers can not able to hold the scale or defferentiate music notes properly.
    3. Let the judge give his comments after each song.
Wrong judgement shall seriously discourage the children as well their parents from keeping hopes on such biased/unprofessional judgements as both categories are poorly judged in this competition.

One of the Most graccious shows of Pearls of Mangalore organized at Abudhabi. All credit must go to Alphonse Mendonca and company for the esquisite beauty in which the whole show was run. The hidden treasurs were lifted up and presented before th great Audience where Bishop Secretary and Priests were also present. The Pics by Ignatius Alva & Godwin DSouza are marvelous and have impressed me. There are greater pearls behind the scenes and the organizing talents show is God's strength to organizers. Praise the Lord for his wonderful creations and talents bestowed in these personalities for the greater happiness of the youth who toil in the Heat and chill at the Gulf environment. Congratulations to the organizers and the sponsors who encouraged this great talents presentation show.Wonderful indeed. Keep it up.

    Dear Erick,
Dony is good singer, no doubt, but lip synching is fooling people. CD's does not have original voice, they always lift the voice in this computer world.
I feel that all the judges should have been Mangaloreans. Cyrilla is a goan and she does not know Mangalorean konkani pronuncian and lyrics.

Dear ANIL D'SA , KINNIMULKI/UDUPI, I don’t know anything about singing, codes, scale etc, but how can you question the judging capacity of Mr. Henry Dsozua, Mrs. Cyrilla Sebastain and Mr. Maxim Pereira. If you knew more than them POM would have been invited you as a guest. Please comment my dear friend or close the chapter. Do not forget to congratulate the winners. Cheers.

Hi dear POM. Porob was good. nice attempt. keeping competition for kids not so much good as parents also gets involved during results come out. Please keep some event like Last years Dabazo where so much interaction with crowd and MC's allowed us to know more konkani culture by conducting quiz of Konakni related things. I loved it. people need some relaxing enjoyeable events in gulf rather than competitions headache.keep that same spirit. God bless.

I have gone through all the comments from contestants supporters. Everyone should accept that there is no looser. All of them are winners one or the other way. We would have known better about the performance if they were given more than one song to sing..Anyway this is the part of a game and errors occur because we are human beings. As the proverb goes on"to err is human and to forgive divine".I have some suggestions which I want everyone to take positively. Conducting such competitions is not an easy job. Whenever this type of mega events are conducted it is always better to give a chance to the judges to give feedback to the contestants soon after their performance as it would help the participants to know their strengths and also to note the areas for further improvement which wasn't taken care in this event. Another important point is after the judges finished giving scores it should be left to them to sit together and decide the final result and put in an envelop and handover to the MC for further announcements. Taking the result backside the stage and then giving final result should be avoided as it was done by the organizers for this event. that is how one can avoid all kind of misunderstandings. Another thing is that no one got a clear idea about the criteria used for judging because there were lot of errors and pronunciation mistakes in the lyrics of many contestants and also mixture of English was noticeable. Hope these points will be kept in mind in the future.

The programme was good. a good platform for the young kids who aspire to be singing stars in the future.everybody seems to have differences in the judges decision. while i may agree to some comments at the end of the day we all have to agree that even judges are human beings and do commit mistakes. result could have been much more better. i liked the way Mclean Fernandes sang.i was dissapointed personally for him not recieving the coveted title. but any ways no problem Macky u r already a winner in most of the crowds minds and hearts. u will gain more sucess in life. also congrats to other contestants and winners, all the kids have a good future. hope a better entertaining programme from POM next time and better judgement.

We felt very crestfallen about the judges decision. As a parents we dont want to comment more, all the daijee viewers and audience already given the judgement. With kids it always happens we feel the other is better and difficlut to judge. It is because kids put so much of their energy and fight to give their best.We loved their performance Sheldon, Mcclean, Marsha, Ryan, Nicole, Jenica, Alvina & (I forgot her name).

Therefore, we need to congratulate the parents for their efforts in making their kids ready for such an event and love for the mother tongue. Also to their music teachers. We are proud of you. Never the less as Mr Henry DSouza said all they are winners and have courage to better their performances. We request them all to carry on singing and to keep up the spirit of love for music.

congratulations Sheldon for having won the prestigious pearl voice singing competition and congrats to all the participants. It was an excellent event and good performance. As i read the comments, it appears that some are not satisfied with the results.
There is no perfect singer on this earth. All great singers do make mistakes, like that, all the participants in this competition have made mistakes and that is the part of the game.Winner is always the best among the contestants.Sheldon by all means was the best among the participants.that does not mean that others did not sing well. All the participants have sung well. Judges job is to decide who is the best among the contestants and sheldon was the best among the contestant. I fully agree with the decision of the judges. All the 3 judges have enough knowledge to judge singing. Only because someone did not win, we must not show our displeasure on the winner.Let us consider their age, all the participants are very young and they have just started to showcase their talents. let us stand by them and support them.

best wishes to the organizers. great event. keep it up. All the winners and runners keep singing.

I belive the judges are very experienced to judge. Mr. Henry who has wealth of experience could not judge wrong and Paul and the other Lady judge are also experienced.

We have to take this decision with the right spirit and not criticise the decision. They are children, any wrong comments could dent their determination to perform as it will break their confidence.

Hats of to Pearls of Mangalore. Keep up the good work.

To all the contestants, all were winners. Do not get disappointed. To the parents, this not the end. This is the begining.

I had witnessed the program, it was good, but when it came to the judgment I was totally surprised to hear the result. The real winners did not get the prize. May be winner was decided on sympathy?

Alwyna sang well but she was very rash just like she was screaming for help, she should have requested the musicians to lower her scale,Jenica was not up to the mark.

An overall programme was good. It was good to see small children were singing along with live band. Hats off to the organisers and specially children and their parents.
It was sad to see the ending part of the programme. We were expecting good results for the competitions but it was dishearten to hear when the results were announced. The judgement was not given as per the performance. It was looking like the results were predecided. As per the public and quality of singing the first place should have been bagged by for Sub-Junior category (chest no 3) Jenica Pinto and Junior category (chest no 4) Alvina Mendonca.
My question to the organisers and judges how Sheldon Fernandes won the prize were he did not maintain his timing and variation. Can they reply?

I think the program was so good, I don't feel that the judgement was wrong, the winners sang very well and they deserved it.
we should not think negative in this regard.

I had a privilege to attend this programme. The programme was good should have been more organised. It was looking that the competition between three MC’s. English MC’s was it really required for this type of programme? There should have been a small break during the programme.
Singing of the children was good however the judgement was not up to the mark from the judges. Audience were stunned with results announced, especially for the first place announced for both the categories. My humble request to the organisers when organising such a great competition make sure the results were also d with proper judgement not with bias or do not organise these competitions for children.

As a mangalorean, i went to saw this event. But i felt there was something wrong in the decission of judges. Sheldon was not at all desereved for the title. Mclean was better than Sheldon. I (along with many people) also surprised why Monisha didnt get as she sung very well. I feel either judges donot know how to judge or there may be golmal in the calculation. I also purchased a CD and gone through it. Sheldon was out of beats.....
