Restrictions in Parts of Capital Srinagar

Srinagar, Dec 4 (IANS): Strict security restrictions were imposed in parts of capital Srinagar Sunday to thwart a traditional Muharram procession by the Shia community here.

The march would start in the afternoon from Guru Bazzar, city's interior locality and wind its way through the historic Lal Chowk, the city centre and culminate at the tourist hub of Dalgate after covering a distance nearly four km.

The authorities early Sunday morning moved heavy police and paramilitary reinforcements in the areas falling under three police stations of Shaheedgunj, Maisuma and Kothibagh to enforce strict restrictions.

No movement was being allowed in the city centre and its adjoining areas.

A senior police officer said restrictions had to be imposed in the areas as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order.

Security forces have erected barricades and coils of razor fitted wire have been placed at some intersections to block pedestrian and vehicular movement.

Authorities are, however, allowing small processions by the Shia community in the interior areas of the city.
