Mangaluru/Udupi, Nov 1: The festival of lights, Deepavali, began on Thursday with grandeur and traditional celebrations across the twin districts.

In parts of Dakshina Kannada, Laxmi Pooja was observed in homes and shops. Residences were adorned with flowers and rangoli, enhancing the festive spirit.

Flower sales were brisk throughout Dakshina Kannada, with many vendors selling from pavements and roadside stalls. Sweet shops saw a surge in sales, while Goodudeepas in various styles hung outside shops, attracting customers. Crowds flocked to firecracker shops, with vendors offering special prizes on purchases.

In Udupi, Deepavali began traditionally with morning oil baths and pooja rituals. By evening, homes, temples, and shops were illuminated with mud lamps, and vibrant Goodudeepas added to the festive atmosphere. Natives working far from home returned to celebrate with their families.

Preparations are underway for Gopooja, Angadipooja, and Laxmi Pooja. Some held Laxmi Pooja and Angadipooja on Thursday itself. Sweet and firecracker sales were strong, with large crowds seen at shops, malls, and bakeries. Deepavali greetings were exchanged widely, and the celebrations are set to reach their peak over the next two days.

Despite rain dampening spirits on Thursday evening, the weather cooled, and some people resumed bursting crackers after the rain stopped around 9 pm.

Its raining heavily everywhere. Next year Deepavali should be rescheduled to some safe months like December. 28, 29 and 30 would be ideal. one day rest after Christmas, one day rest after Deepavali for NYC. happy Deepavali to all.
