Lokpal Bill Tabled, to have Statutory Status

New Delhi, Dec 9 (IANS): Recommending statutory status for the institution of the ombudsman, the standing committee on the Lokpal Friday tabled its report in both houses of parliament.

Panel chief Abhishek Manu Singhvi (Congress) tabled the report in the Rajya Sabha while Pinaki Misra of the Biju Janata Dal (BJP) did so in the Lok Sabha.

Addressing a press conference outside parliament, Singhvi said statutory status had been recommended for the Lokpal while the issue of bringing the prime minister under its ambit had been left to parliament.

There had been three suggestions - inclusion of the prime minister under Lokpal, non-inclusion and deferred inclusion, he added.

The bill will be scrutinised by the law ministry and the home ministry and brought for discussion and passage in the winter session before it ends Dec 22.
