Bangalore: Without Coal, Thermal Plants may have to be Shut: Shobha

From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Dec 9: The severe shortage of coal hampering power generation in the thermal power plants in Karnataka figured in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly on Friday again with Energy Minister Shobha Karandlaje coming with a dire warning that the State may be forced to shut down all its thermal power plants if sufficient supply of coal was not ensured.

Replying to a question from Independent member Goolihatt D Shekar in the Assembly, the minister said the Raichur thermal power station, which is one of the main thermal power generating station in the State, had a stock of hardly 37,000 tonnes of coal.

The coal stock was 4.7 lakh tonnes in April at the Raichur thermal power plant against its actual requirement of 7 lakh tonnes, the minister said.

The minister said has been concerted efforts to impress upon the Centre to rush to the rescue of the State by ensuring adequate supplies of coal and the Chief Minister had personally written to the Union Coal Minister. Meanwhile, the State had even taken a delegation to Delhi to request the Centre to ensure that the State’s requirement for coal was met.

''We are still hoping for a positive response from the Centre,” she said pointing out that the State would be facing a severe power shortage as the summer season picks up.

Karandlaje said the State Government had already taken steps for purchase of 500 mw of power from Jindal Power Ltd and negotiations were underway to get another 150 mw from the company.

The State Government is making efforts to buy power from Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab, she added.

    Dear Mr. Dinesh Poojary, Kundapura/Bengaluru,
If we have shortage of power why did BJP opposed tooth and nail in the parliament about civilian nuclear power?

As you say I quote Moreover our govt. officials always fail to take the required safety and security measures. This is the apathy of our country. Unquote.

NOW YOU BLAMING THE GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS AND OUR COUNTRY ITSELF.

WAS IT NOT THE BJP ACTED IRRESPONSIBLY AGAINST CIVILIAN NUCLEAR POWER IN THE PARLIAMENT AND LATER REGRETTED FOR OPPOSING BY BOTH THE BJP AND THE CPIM.

It is the government and the citizens both are responsible for power shortage.
    1) Rampant power theft by the citizens.
    2) Free power for farmers has caused bore-well pumps running relentlessly, at least should charge half rate.
    3) Government offices never care to put off the lights & air-conditioners.
    4) The transformers and power stations are all old and power leakage
    5) The worst is the electricity department.
Mr. Nagesh Nayak was responding that in Karnataka bjp provides 24 hour power supply. Where is 24 hour power supply Mr. Nagesh Nayak?

Dear Mr. Francis, Moodbidri/Dubai your comment is half correct: Sonia is not too old but ADVANI DAADA IS A TEENAGER.

POWER SHORTAGE WILL BE THERE FOR FEW YEARS IF ANY GOVERNMENT RULES BECAUSE OF HIGH POWER CONSUMPTION BY PEOPLE AND INDUSTRIES BECAUSE OF DEVELOPMENTS.

Francis, Moodbidri/Dubai Advaniji's contribution towards politics is really great. Sonia is still a kid to politics when campare to Advaniji. So whatever Dinesh Poojary commented against Sonia is 100% correct. Now some of the commentators might come back with their comments stating Pakistani born Advani, Pakistani led BJP etc etc because apart from that they dont have any new thing to comment.

    Dear Jossey Saldanha, Mangalore/Mapusa/ Mumbai

Have you seen power problem only in Mangalore? Haven't you seen power cut in Mapusa or Mumbai?

My cousins in Mumbai always tells me about power cuts in Mumbai (sometimes 2-3 Hours a day in central areas). I also visited Mumbai, I have seen water and power problems over there which is very worst when compared to our capital Bangalore.

The whole India has power problem. Because we depend more on conventional methods of power generation like hydro, coal. Developed countries rely on atomic power generation. If our govt plans to build new atomic plant or to expand the existing one, the local people protest against the govt. Moreover our govt officials always fail to take the required safety and security measures. This is the apathy of our country.

Your question "In the last 3 years have these guys added even a single megawatt of POWER?"

Yes, not only single. They added in 1000's in last 3 years. Let me know if you want statistics on this. Don't try to blind some one here by your hatred comments. If you have any personal problem with someone, tell that directly. To be frank with you, power cut was more during SM Krishna's regime.. People of Bangalore may not agree with me since he took care of Blore very well neglecting other parts of the state.

Off course without coal thermal power plant cannot run is a known fact!
But there is no point in blaming others!
Please do the necessary to provide the required coal either by export or import.
There is a requirement to have plans for the next 100 years for power solutions in the state of Karnataka. Finding out the possible resources available in and around causing the least problems to environment and people around is a challenge, but is surely possible if there is a good will and commitment towards the state.

When Jindal's ect. are supplying power to other states from here what actions Shoba has taken? nothing because they can not. When a state is into rapid progress such incapable ministers prove hurdles on the way.Till date this minister has just followed her guru by one act, castles in the air.
