Dubai: KEL Signs off Year with Event on Leadership Development

Media Release

Dubai, Dec 11: 'The greatest discovery of all time is that a person can change his future by merely changing his attitude' - Oprah Winfrey

The final event of the Kanara Entrepreneurs Limited (KEL) for the year 2011 'Leadership Development – Key for Long Term Success' was successfully carried out on December 10 at the India Club. The workshop was conducted by Jolly Mathews, Certified Life Coach, Human Strategist and Trainer.

The event was well received and attendees included entrepreneurs and professionals from various fields.

Shobha Mendonca, president of KEL, welcomed the attendees and introduced Jolly Mathews, the keynote speaker of the evening. She thanked Mathews for extending his stay in Dubai while on a Corporate Training assignment to address KEL members. Mathews is an active member of Dimensions Mumbai, a KEL associate organization and partner of Entreprenet 2012, a premier Entrepreneurial event to be held in Mumbai on January 13 and 14.

Jolly Mathews is recently retired after a career spanning 38 years in Novartis India Limited. During his 40 year career, he has had stints in Frontline Sales, Line Management, HR and Sales Training. His forte has been people skills, training and communications - both oral and written.

Mathews is a science graduate with post graduate qualifications in Marketing and Personnel Management. He is a certified leadership trainer for Novartis across the world and conducted leadership training for their senior managers in Dubai, Johannesburg, Jakarta, Manila, Dhaka and Mumbai. He is a certified Life Coach and MBTI facilitator.

Rather than taking a backseat after retirement Jolly Mathews felt he had still a lot more to offer and has started his organization - ‘The Pedagogue’ - a Human Strategies organization that assists in design and delivery of customized strategies for discovery, enhancement and utilization of human resources to impact performance and productivity.

Mathews kicked off the program with a short presentation which gave the participants an understanding of the Management and Leadership processes. It gave tips on how to acquire greater personal awareness and insights, which can be used to impact people and thereby organizations, whether as contributing employees or as business owners. The presentation also covered aspects of how to unleash full potential through personal goal-setting, prioritization and innovative thought processes. Good Leaders see the vision, feel the vision, inspire the vision, take responsibility for it, give life to it and communicate by living with it.

A good leader would only help create more leaders, a famous quote by Ralph Nader, Mathew said. They work towards identifying them, empowering them, recognizing and rewarding them. This creates a ripple effect in the organization and both the individual and organizations benefit tremendously.

Don’t spend your energy defending yesterday – instead spend your energy exploiting today and the future - What business is, will be and should be . Mathew said Mathews presentation was followed by a interactive questions and answers session.

Induction ceremony of new members was held after the workshop. Shobha Mendonca, pinned the lapel pins on each member and Julian Lewis, director membership handed over the welcome kit.

The director of events, Charles D’Souza, in the closing note reminded the members to proactively network with each other. He explained that this year, KEL has delivered 8 events for its members that were well attended, on an average of over 100 people per event.

He particularly thanked Juliana Mascarenhas (w/o lead member Francis Mascarenhas), Jacintha Mendonca (w/o lead member Lawrence Mendonca), Cynthia Lewis (w/o lead member Julian Lewis) and Lenny D'Souza (w/o lead member Mark D’Souza) for their consistent voluntary service towards KEL in making the events successful.

He broadly explained the annual picnic - an overnight event at the Plama Hotel at Umm Al Quwain planned for January 27 and 28, 2012.

Alfred Vaz, the president elect proposed the vote of thanks and invited the participants for networking and dinner.
