Mangalore, Dec 11: "We the Jesuit priests are transferred every six years from one place to another for different services. The credit goes to the teaching and non-teaching staff for their selfless service in bringing name and the fame to St Aloysius Institutions," said Fr Joseph Rodrigues, the patron of St Aloysius College Alumni Association (SACAA).

He was speaking at a felicitation ceremony for teaching and non-teaching staff who have rendered more than 25 years of service to St Aloysius Institutions, held on Saturday December 10.

The integrity shown by the staff in continuing with the same institutions for more than 25 years is highly commendable. Hence the felicitation is rightly organized by SACAA, he further added.

Fr Leo was felicitated with lifetime award for the contribution made to St Aloysius Institutions as principal, rector, director of boys home and presently as the director of Applied Biology lab. Acknowledging the honour, he said he was overwhelmed with joy.

As many as 62 members of the teaching and non-teaching staff were felicitated during the event, including 12 from primary and middle school, two from technical training institute, 25 from degree and 23 from high school. They were given citation with mementos and bouquets.

Sarvajna Achar, one of the awardees representing the teaching staff, addressed the gathering and expressed gratitude to the alumni for honoring them. Paul D’Souza, representing the non-teaching staff, was deeply overwhelmed. A year ago a suggestion was made to recognize even the non-teaching staff as they serve equally in the institutions. "I am happy our suggestions was considered," Paul said.

Lauding the efforts of alumni association for getting the staff, students, alumni and the management together, Fr Swebert D’Silva, the director of SACAA and principal of St Aloysius degree college stressed on the importance of both staff and non-teaching staff. ‘They are two faces of the same coin and their service is equal in the long run in the betterment of the institution," he said.

N G Mohan, the convener of the swimming pool project, briefed about the Rs 2.3-crore project. "This was planned in the year 1967 and the execution was possible this year. The license has been obtained from the authorities, the spot has been finalised by the management and the project might complete in the month of January 2013," he said.

For the implementation of the plan, an amount of Rs 1 crore has been assured by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the rest of the funds have to be raised by the management, he said. Silver Coin Scheme and Donation plan have been introduced to raise the fund. The former allows the well wisher or the alumni to pick a coin of 600 to 6000 and pay the amount, while the latter permits one to donate according to one's personal choice, he explained.

Arthur D'Souza, president of SACAA by picking the silver coin started the mission of fund raising. The executive committee members also picked the coins. Naveen Mascarenhas, secretary of SACAA, proposed the vote of thanks. Smitha Hegde compered the event. As many as 300 people were gathered on the occasion.

Of course, there were other lecturers of 1969 -1972 PMC batch, lecturers Mr. Giridhar Rao, Lecturer in Physics, Fr. L.F. Rasquinha, Mr. Naik, and Chemistry lecturers, and Mathematics lecturers late Mr. Krishnamurthy, Mr. Upadhya, Mr. Immanuel, Fr. Elias D'Souza and others. I admire all of them and after God, and my parents, bow my head to all of my lecturers, I meet my Physics Lecturer Mr. K.V. Rao and Mr. Saldanha quite often. It is because of your dedicated teaching, I have learnt many things in my life. May you and your family be blesed at all times. I bow before you and salute all of you. As I write this message, I recall my B.Sc. Degree college days 1969-1972 at St. Aloysius College. Great indeed you are all.

The noblest of professions in my opinion is 'TEACHING' Here the teachers give of themselves to others in the form of education. The Jesuits take the lead in this area. The nine Jesuits of sacred memory who landed on The Idgah Hill were the pioneers in this line and they and their successors have left a legacy behind and for over one hundred and thirty-one years the mission continues. Their selfless sacrifices have been greatly responsible for educating thousands of people. Everywhere one can see The Aloysian glory.

I am happy and proud to be an Aloysian even though an ancient one (being 1922 Model. It is my pleasure to be constantly associated with Aloysian activities.

It is good to see that SACAA has taken the responsibility to honour Teachers over twenty-five years of service. This is a step in the right direction. These teachers are mentors and have been greatly responsible to bring the best out of the wards entrusted to their care. I full agree and appreciate the statement made by Our rector Rev. Father Joseph Rodrigues in this regard.

I join the management of SACAA in congratulating the teachers for their great service and contribution to the welfare of students entrusted to their care.

KUDO to SACAA on their initiative.
