Bangalore: No Proposal to Ban 'Made Snana' - Dr Acharya

Daijiworld Media Network – Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Dec 13: Amidst the esclating pressure and raging controversy over the continuance of the ritual of Made Made Snana' prevalent in Lord Subrahmanyeshwara Temple in Subrahmanya during the annual car festival, state muzrai minister Dr V S Acharya said that there is no immediate proposal to ban this ritual. He made this announcement at the legislative council session on Monday December 12.

“This is a very sensitive and delicate issue. No hurried decision can be taken on this age-old practice. At the same time, I do not support the ritual. The government will try to find a solution after holding discussions with scholars and leaders from the region,” he stated.

The minister dubbed as improper the terming of the performance of this ritual by people by certain sections as stupidity. “It would be wrong to say that. Some persons may find this tradition, which has been handed down since centuries, as inhuman. But we cannot hurt the sentiments of the devotees,” he clarified. He pointed out that the ritual of Made Made Snana had not been started after the BJP government came to power, and that records reveal that the ritual was prevalent even before 1532. The minister said that he is feeling harassed at having to face criticisms relating to the issue, although he had done nothing wrong in this connection.

Opposition leader, Motamma, who termed Made Made Snana ritual as bad and indecent, asked the government not to allow this practice to continue in the guise of faith. She demanded placing a ban on the ritual like the earlier bans brought on the inhuman traditions of ‘Sati’, ‘Bettale Seve’, ‘Devadasi’ and others.

BJP MLC, Kota Srinivas Poojary, said that none of the members are supporting the system, but that the people have been performing this ritual as a service to the deity out of devotion.

In the meanwhile, president of Karnataka State Backward Classes Awareness Forum, K S Shivaramu, in a press conference held at Mysore on Monday, warned of organizing a protest Padayatra from Bangalore to Udupi in the first week of January 2012, if the government does not place a ban on this ritual by December 31. He said that Nidumamidi Veerabhadra Chennamalla Swamiji will lead this Padayatra.

Brahmins are a microscopic segment of vast in Hindu religion. They do not enjoy neither reservation or get support from any government state or central. In fact Brahmins do not become a begging bowl for such facilities lured to other segments.Yet they enjoy a better status in every fieled not because of any result of discrimination but their sheer will power and hard dedicated work and commitment to live pious life.If we go to the history of many of our great leaders who are from brahmin segment lent every thing to the soceity and country. They never looked upon for underworld/goonda activities till today. That does not mean that all is well with them. There are lot disparities in status economic and otherwise. In fact much of the brahmins are subject of exploitation at every level. Accordingly they do not have any ill conceived notion on madee snana prevelent in Sree Kukke temple which is participattion of by them selves along with others. This is an act of total surrender to the presiding deity.Such acts are prevelent in Christians too. Bishop will wash feet of 12 people of the community to mark ohe occassion of Jesus Christ respecting his deciples before last supper.Muslims will throw stones at devil illusioned during holly Haz and many times poor disabled devotees will die in the stampade. No body can think of banning these unhygenic, detrimental acts but prejudiced minds workout only attacking Hindu religion as was happening during Mogal rule. Those day are over now.

The roll over service is done by the low caste people on the leftover food eaten by the upper castes. So Acharya being an upper caste doesnt want to stop it. Is he prepared to the madesnana on the food left by the lower caste people??? No not at all. If he is from lower caste, he would have taken initiative to stop it. Deviding society on the ill founded religous beliefs is the agenda of RSS who are full of upper caste only....

There are many arguments here which say "If someone wants to do it, why do you stop".
This is such a ridiculous argument if the same logic was applied, we would have had "child marriage", "sati", "polygamy", "bettle seve", "untoubhability", etc.... etc... the list can go on..... Anyone who is against the ban or says he is undecided or says he does not care eitehr way is criminal and a hypocrite...They are the ones who are teh cause why our nation still is where it is.

This is a unnecessary controversy created by people who want to have some political benifit. Nobody is forcing anyone to do this ritual. this relegious belief came from ages. Can we question a Muslim why they are making prayer call AZAN every day, since every Muslim knows when he has to pray & at what time(Nwday evrybody uses watch). AZANis a relegious ritual came from ages & it is vry personal to every Muslim. v have to respect individual relegious belief. Otherwise it will devide society.

He should fight for that cause. If that is ensured by next generation there will be no one from that community partcipating in this ritual. Mr. Acharya, you may not have committed any wrong in this connection by not supporting this ritual but you are defiinitely doing something wrong, as a doctor and a minister, by not raising your voice against this de-humanising ritual. Remember, there are sins of commission as well as sins of omission. When we should oppose something which is effecting the dignity of a human being, we ALL should do it, irrespective of caste and religion.
And Anamika, don't try to intimidate others by asking them 'back off' from this issue. It is a issue of human dignity, and I believe, every self-respecting individual should air his/her view about this.

It was starting long before by the upper caste (brahmines)when dalits were not educated and untouchability was in practice. It is so sad to see such practice still continued only for the unprivilaged innocent dailts which is not at all required any more as we are all human beings. People who practice such rituals need to come out of such blind beliefs as we are equal before our almighty God.

We had many rituals and practices in Hinduism which were started by upper castes and rich class of society in olden days to showcase their supremacy, for example 'untouchability' (Asparshyathana)and 'restrictions to enter Temples', and some other practices like'Sathi Sahagamana' etc. But gradually all those practices vanished as people become more literate and intelligent, and many great personalities including many people from upper caste fought for it. And that is how we overcome some of the minor criticism about our beloved religion. I feel even 'Madesnana'is one of such practices, and it has to be banned, because as per our epics or our vedas God has never said that he will bless us for rolling on the spat and left overs of some people, Infact god will bless us if we disonctinue these practices and purify our religion in the eyes of society by doing it.
With full respect to my reliogion to all the devotees.

Malakudiya's have more religious rights in Subrahmanya Temple & they are in forefront to protect madesnana practise. This customs trace back to centuries, & people irrespective of caste perform this seva voluntarily to seek Lord Subrahmanya's blessings.

Some so called intellectuals who has less knowledge of this tradition, basically outsiders have been poaring in comments, as if they are forced to do. If one has right to protest, also other has right to protect his tradition & right of faith. If we closely look at the articles laid by Indian Constitution, this right of faith & practise cannot be stopped as one does it at his faith & not at expense of other. Some unseen hands is also perhaps acting to damage the majority peoples religous sentiments.

My Question to people who want to stop this practice. Can you go & convince to each person who wish to made-made snana to stop the practice.? If you force with your protest, belivers will force you back like few days earlier event.

Any belief if it lowers the dignity of any person or community whether real or symbolic should be banned. If beliefs like sathi, betthale seve, pranibali gejje puje, deevadaasi etc., were not stopped forcibly we would see some believers practicing it and people like Mr. Acharya would have supported it in the name of not hurting the belief of people. It is time we do away with any un-reasonable religious practice.

We do not know the reason why people perform this Made Snana but it happens to be one of the strong belief and rituals performed by all Hindu People for so many generations. We do not know why some NGOs’ suddenly wake up & opposing this rituals. Nobody forcing anybody to perform this ritual. Better not to touch or hurt Hindus religious feelings.

    Good decision by government.

Today some atheists may demand ban on "made snana". Tomorrow they will say "teertha" given in temple is from polluted water so start using Bisleri water for "teertha". Then they will say kissing between person is unsanitary and may demand ban on that also.

Then next day someone will say, shaving head of children in Tirupathi is barbaric. TVs will telecast shots of children heads being shaved in Tirupati and demand ban on that as well in the name of "human rights" or "child abuse".

Remember - today these atheists are targeting Hindu practices but don't forget tomorrow they may go after some tradition in Christian and Muslim community.

I salute the Doctor to sticking up to people's belief system instead of being cowed down by some atheists from Mysore sponsored by foreign NGOs.
