New Delhi, Dec 13 (IANS): The Congress Monday hit out at Anna Hazare for his attacks on party chief Sonia Gandhi and general secretary Rahul Gandhi, terming the remarks "unfortunte". The party also alleged that Team Anna's anti-corruption agitation was being used to further "communal politics."

Congress spokesperson Renuka Chowdhury, referring to Hazare's remarks, said they reflected the "sorry state of affairs."

"It is unfortunate that political opportunism over rules the practice of democracy and personal attacks on individuals are only a sorry state of affairs. We can only pity those who believe that this is the way to establishing their own credibility," Chowdhury said.

Hazare has attacked Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of pressurising Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to go back on an assurance to include his demands concerning Lokpal bill. Hazare Saturday also made a mention of Sonia Gandhi not keeping well and said her "condition may deteriorate if we say anything".

Asked if the government made a mistake in dealing with Hazare, Chowdhury said the party's decency had been misinterpreted.

Congress leader Digvijay Singh, who also addressed the media along with Chaudhury, said he had been saying that there was a political agenda to Hazare's anti-corruption movement.

Former union minister Rasheed Masood, who joined the Congress Monday, said the anti-corruption agitation was being used to further "communal politics".

He said an effort was being made to damage Congress and weaken the country's democratic foundation.

He said the stance taken by Team Hazare during the Hisar Lok Sabha by-election had fundamentally changed his perception about their agitation.

"They used Hisar election to give a boost to communal forces," Masood alleged.
