Chikmagalur: Father Stabs Daughter Even as Police, Crowd Look On

Chikmagalur, Dec 13: In a surprising incident, a man stabbed his daughter in full public glare and in the presence of police on Sunday December 12. The police had summoned the concerned to the police station to sort out differences over the love affair of the person’s daughter with a boy of another religion.

Mamata, daughter of Ramachandra from Sullia Aletty, Dakshina Kannada district, has been in love with Moidin, a resident of Basavanahalli in Chikmagalur, since the last two years. The youth is employed in Dubai, while the girl is a nursing student in a private hospital in Bangalore.

They reportedly came to know each other during the visits of the youth to Sullia for business. It is learnt that Mamata had come here a week back, stayed in a relative’s house, visited her boyfriend’s home, and had even changed her name. It is said that the marriage had been planned for Monday December 13.

The parents of the girl were strongly opposing the alliance. It is said that on Sunday night, after prolonged parleys, both parties had agreed for the marriage of the pair. At the time when both of them were being sent together, activists of an organization objected to the alliance, as a result of which the issue again came before the police officials. Till Sunday afternoon, the issue could not be settled, as repeated pleas of the youth to the girl failed to convince her to take a strong stand.

After lot of dilly-dallying, the girl finally announced that she was ready to accompany the youth. Her father, who was standing with a crowd, got angry and stabbed his daughter’s neck with a knife, eyewitnesses said. At this point, a stone was also thrown at the police station. At the same time, a stone said to have been pelted by the mother of the youth, damaged a hired car in which the girl’s father had come to the police station.

Preliminary treatments provided at the intensive care unit of the local hospital failed to stop the blood oozing out of the girl’s neck. She was carried to Hassan for advanced treatment.

Thereafter, hundreds of people gathered in front of the police station. Deputy superintendent of police, Vedamurty, along with other officials, visited the spot and collected information.
