Two More Arrested in AMRI Fire Case


Kolkata, Dec 13 (IANS): Two senior staffers of the AMRI Hospital here were arrested Tuesday in connection with Friday's blaze that left 93 dead in the upscale medical facility, taking to nine the number of those held for the country's worst fire tragedy in a hospital, a police officer said.

Senior vice president (Projects) S. Upadhyay and senior manager (Maintenance) Sanjiv Pal were arrested and would be brought before a city court later Tuesday, the officer said.

Earlier, seven hospital directors, including Shrachi Group chairman S.K. Todi and his counterpart in the Emami Group R.S. Goenka, were nabbed hours after the fire holocaust in South Kolkata's Dhakuria area and were remanded in 10 days' police custody by a city court.

Of the seven directors, R.S. Agarwal, who got himself admitted to a private hospital, could not be presented before the court. He has been kept under arrest there.
