Mangalore, Dec 13: A thanksgiving ceremony was held at the bishop's house here on Tuesday December 13 for those who had played a prominent role in prompting the Karnataka State Cabinet to withdraw the cases against 338 innocent Christian youth in the 2008 church attacks. The decision had been announced on December 1.

It took more than three years and concerted efforts on the part of IFKCA, Archbishop of Bangalore Dr Bernard Moras, bishop of Mangalore Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza and a few other organizations, the laity and the clergy to apprise and request the government to withdraw the cases wrongly filed against the Catholic youth, following the events of the aftermath of the attack on churches in Mangalore and Udupi in 2008.

Bishop of Mangalore Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza presiding over the programme said, "It is a victory of truth, as the decision proved that the accused were innocent and did not attack, but only protested against those who had attacked the sacred places of Christian community."

He thanked all the lawyers of the diocese who fought for justice.

Fr Onil D'Souza, director of CODP said, "When there is failure no one comes forward to take responsibility, but when there is success everyone will claim credit. This movement has been a collective effort and it would be wrong to take individual credit."

Fr William Menezes praised the efforts of Ivan D'Souza, M P Noronha, Roy Castelino and others who supported the mission taken up by the diocese of Mangalore. He said that Ivan D’Souza had fought in almost 95 % of the cases and MP Noronha had challenged the Justice Somshekar commission report.

MP Noronha said that there had been pressure to withdraw the cases at national and international levels. It was an honest and collective effort from the people involved. As mentioned in the statement issued by the Cabinet, the withdrwal of cases was done in response to the request from diocesan clergies and International Federation of Christian Association. He also said that Ronald Colaco had also put in lots of efforts in getting the cases withdrawn.

Roy Castelino proposed the vote of thanks and congratulated the youth for fighting for the cause when there was a need.

Advocates Ivan D'Souza and M P Noronha, Fr Onil D’Souza, PRO Fr William Menezes  and Roy Castelino were present on the dais.

Denis D’Souza, who was charged in one case, expressed his gratitude to Almighty and all those who had played a key role in the process.

I am a Catholic and studied in government organizations till postgraduation. Nowhere I was taught any religious matters. Instead, government schools teach secular values. I need not write any comment in fake names. Louis Mangalore, you are just Christian fanatic, who think only Christian schools are great, which made teaching a business. Where are the values when it comes to fees in Christian schools?

thanks giving ceremony for whom ?.Is it for the youths who suffered or for the credit mongers ?. Iam appearing for 14 youths who were arrestd from the milagres on the 1st day,and also for about 20 youths from kulshekar and nearly 15 from permude. Few of the boys, who were arrrested from milagres are so poor,i pay even their bus charges when they come to attend the cout.U PRIESTS did you all help them with one rupee. one of them is a juvenile, coming from Hassan with his mother to attend the case.they cannot afford even a propper meal a day.Iam told on several occasions he along with his mother visited the bishop house, asking for help but he was sent even without paying a penny. is that we are supposed to do for a person who has suffered ? Dear friends, thank mr Denis Dsilva who really worked hard and followed up by running from table to table to get the cases withdrawn and Mr Ronald colaco for putting in lot of efforts in getting the cases withdrawn. Dear youths, dont forget, the cases are still pending before the court and it will not be withdrawn until the app gets the order from the govt.

Dear Paul Dsouza, all these Bajarangadala, RSS etc trouble Christians once in a while. Whereas our religious leaders harass us regularly. Even to ring the church bell for our funeral we have to pay them. Church marriage enalments have become more expensive and complicated than court divorce. Corruption inside church is growing day by day. What you say about this? One final request..... Government of Karnataka has withdrawn cases. Similarly can our Bishop and Parish Priests kindly withdraw all the cases they have put against the lay people in different parts of Mangalore Diocese???

comments should not be raised by those who have not attended this programme. However we can see the alienation and distance growing between the leaders and the people. it is said " for all wealth gained there is a crime". nowadays people are judged by the wealth they have, how active they are in religious activities etc. what is required is empowerment of the people by training for jobs, career guidance, assistance for education.

As everyone should be aware, it has been the long established fact that all Catholics, and the whole Christian community at large, irrespective of their segmentation of faith, beliefs and following, are a peace loving and pious mob and society. They have never been, and never will be, the trouble makers and resort to violence unless they have been provoked and drawn into. They are fairly well educated and informed, and are tolerant and supportive of the other religions and their beliefs, and they totally believe in co-existence, if any past experience over the years speaks for itself. One should, therefore, never venture to interfere with their way of religious following and practices in the future, either in the Churches and/or elsewhere, as long as, of course, such practices and followings are not a nuisance, and do not hinder and disturb the smooth day-to-day living of the community that surrounds them, and it should be the same case in the case of other religions and communities as well. India is a democratic country and secular for that matter, where one is totally free to practice one`s religion and religious beliefs, and it is the full duty and responsibility of the law and order authorities in place to ensure that some non-social and ill-informed members in the society cause disturbance and resort to violent action.

If it is the thanks giving ceremony, you should have called the organisation leaders like IFKCA, Catholic Sabha, Federation of Konkani Associations Bangalore etc who have worked behind this move. Why the lawyers like Mariamma Thomas, Elizabeth Neliyara etc have not been invited? It was known to the world that Mariamma Thomas and Elizabeth Neliyara, two brave lady advocates were supplying food to the boyswho were inside sub-jail Mangalore. Bajpe, Permude,Katipalla, Partly Kulshekar, Bunder cases were fought by Elizabeth Neliyara. She was not present in the programme and the organisers never had any courtsey to mention their names at least. There were cases against 338 youth and now those cases have been withdrawn. If you watch the photographs keenly, there are hardly 60 persons attended this programme. When I enquired about this number among one of my friends present over there, I shocked to know that there were hardly 30-35 case victims attended todays programme and rest 30 were invitees including few priests, press and media. Why the rest 300 have boycotted this programme? Is it for the reason that they have not been invited or may be for that they are not happy about the role played by Bishop and his team in withdrawal of cases? While Church attack incident had happened Bishop had wisely or else may be due to doctor's advise had been admitted in hospital. With such attitude is it really possible for him to protect our youth? As Fr. Onil has rightly narrated, many are there to claim the credit, and that number starts from Fr. Onil himself....anyway, one more family get together of all effected youth is urgently needed under the leadership of those who have really helped the youth. May be Mariamma Thomas advocate is the right person to take leadership
