Dubai, Nov 21: Dr S M Syed Khaleel, a distinguished entrepreneur, social worker, and influential figure from Bhatkal, Karnataka, passed away in Dubai in the early hours of Thursday, November 21, after suffering a double heart attack. He was 86 years old.
Khaleel was admitted to Aster Hospital Mankhool on Tuesday after experiencing severe leg weakness. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, his condition worsened due to a major heart attack, leading to his untimely demise. His passing has left a deep void in both the Nawayath community in coastal Karnataka and the global community he served.
A highly respected figure in international trade, social service, and education, Khaleel made significant contributions to his community and the business world. He was a well-known philanthropist and a beloved leader in the Nawayath community. He had been recognized as one of the ‘100 Smartest People in the UAE’ by the Arabian Business magazine, which brought global attention to his achievements.
Dr Khaleel was also the chairman of SahilOnline, a renowned news portal from Bhatkal, where he served for over 25 years. In addition to his entrepreneurial achievements, he was a founding member of the Dubai chapter of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), where he served as chairman from 1987 to 1994. A chartered accountant by profession, he worked with Mahindra Ugine Steel before joining the Galadari family, where he played a significant role as general manager of Khaleej Times and later as the group executive director of the Ilyas and Mustafa Galadari Group.
His passing is deeply mourned by the Bhatkal community and coastal Karnataka. In honour of his contributions, educational institutions in Bhatkal will remain closed today as a mark of respect.
Dr Syed Khaleel is survived by his family and a community that will forever cherish his legacy of service, leadership, and compassion.
