Team Pili Gobbu: Steps of tradition, waves of change

Media Release

Bahrain, Nov 26: Team Pili Gobbu, a dynamic cultural group based in Bahrain, is making remarkable strides in preserving the heritage of Tulunadu while connecting the global Tulu diaspora. Rooted in the tradition of Pili Vesha (Tiger Dance), the group transcends performances, blending cultural preservation, community service, and global promotion of Tulu heritage on international platforms.

Formed with the primary aim of safeguarding and celebrating the rich cultural traditions of Tulunadu, particularly through Pili Vesha, Team Pili Gobbu's vision extends beyond performances. It embraces community building, charitable initiatives, and uniting individuals from diverse backgrounds through shared cultural appreciation.

Under the leadership of dedicated members like Chiragh Suvarna, Ganesh Salian, Kaushik Suvarna, and other passionate individuals, the team’s inclusivity has become its strength. The journey began with an electrifying Pili Vesha performance featuring performers such as Gambheer Kunder, Kiran Poojary, Sampath Shetty, Sujan Bangera, Kishore Poojary, Sachin Poojary, Pramod Nayak, Rajesh Shettigar, and Master Akshar Shettigar. What started as a one-off performance quickly grew into a movement that captivated both participants and audiences. Today, the team boasts over 50 members and continues to grow, united by their shared passion for preserving and promoting Tulunadu’s vibrant cultural heritage.

A vision beyond performances

While Pili Vesha remains at the heart of their identity, Team Pili Gobbu has expanded its purpose significantly. The group is actively involved in:

  1. Cultural Events: Reviving Tulu customs and traditions through engaging performances and events.
  2. Charitable Activities: Giving back to society by supporting charity drives, fundraising events, and meaningful causes that benefit the community.
  3. Community Building: Organizing sports, cultural programs, and other activities that foster unity within the community.

Recently, the team had the privilege of felicitating Yakshagana legend Yakshadruva Patla Satish Shetty during a cultural event. Another milestone was their stellar performance at the Mosaru Kudike event hosted by Anand Lobo, president of the Karnataka Social Club Bahrain, where they secured the first runners-up position. Such accolades inspire them to continue growing and contributing.

Looking ahead

Team Pili Gobbu envisions a future where the traditions of Tulunadu are celebrated globally. They aspire to build a platform that not only preserves cultural art forms like Pili Vesha but also inspires younger generations to embrace and take pride in their heritage.

As they work to create a harmonious blend of culture and service, Team Pili Gobbu stands as a testament to how tradition can thrive in modern settings. With their dedication and vision, they are poised to leave an indelible legacy—honoring the past while paving the way for a vibrant future.
