Mangaluru, Nov 28: State fisheries minister Mankal Vaidya has responded positively to the concerns raised by country boat organizations, stating that a study will be conducted by IIT Chennai to explore the feasibility of converting the Kulai Jetty into an all-season port.

During discussions with fishermen on Wednesday, Vaidya acknowledged the inadequacy of the current project for country boat fishing. He stated, “The project, conceptualized 40 to 50 years ago, is outdated and unsuitable for today’s environment. The NMPA should have sought fishermen's advice before initiating the project. If you can’t address the concerns, say so clearly now; otherwise, I will take a decision.”

MLA Dr Bharat Shetty noted that fishermen do not oppose the port's construction but emphasized that it must accommodate country boats and be suitable for all seasons. He urged the NMPA officials to revise the blueprint based on fishermen’s suggestions to avoid further issues.

MLA Yashpal Suvarna stressed the need for proper breakwater construction to ensure the safety of country boat fishermen. He called on the government to address the fishermen's demands.

Ashwath Kanchan, president of the Dakshina Kannada Fishermen Association, reiterated the demands for an all-season port, adjustments to the breakwater, and a design that supports country boat fishing. He warned that the current construction, if continued, would jeopardize fishermen's lives.
